Maybe if there was a more concerted effort to clean it up, Sphinn wouldn't be "sphinning" down. Personally, I know many people who have started to be disillusioned by Sphinn, have stopped "sphinning" things and who refuse to pronounce is "spin" ;)

You mean the same "SEO Gossip" Serena that spammed a whole bunch of us today with links to another blog post and doesn't bother to identify him/herself, but has a lot of negative things to say to everyone?
ORLY? I did not receive said spam. If that's true, then it's rather sad to hear as it takes away quite a bit of credibility from this post.
Yea, I agree, it's sad to hear that..Bummer..
From the spam email from Gossip Girl Serena
"Greetings search fans I'm back with another post: SEO Conference Speakers – SEO'ing like it's 1999, check it out [link to the blog post removed by Kim]
XOXO Serena
It was strange to get it, not knowing who this person is and having never signed up to get email from that blog. This sphinn post is for the ONLY post made to the blog in February and the spam was for the ONLY post for March so far. New blog, 2 posts.
As I added on the Comments to her blog About page, which were surprisingly left open:
If you do not want to tell us, then I am sure that we do not want to know.
Not sphinning this, but don't want my comments to disappear behind the Desphinn tab so will not Desphinn either.
Not so sure whether that entirely takes away from the point of the post though. There are an awful lot of samey posts going hot these days and they seem to go in waves. Like a couple of weeks ago when every second submission seemed to be spruiking the same reasons why we should all be using Twitter...
And does the fact a blog only has two posts take away from the point?
Kimota has got a point. This seems to be like Sphinn Trolls are acting a little bit like the stumbleupon trolls of past... She has two posts, and is trying to get with the "in" crowd of Shpinn. So what? Give the girl a break.
Barry - you can desphinn AND comment out here. :-)
Matt, I was trying to avoid duplicate content. :-)
Kimota and Oggy have good points; but on the other hand, so does cre8pc. Receiving an email out of the blue is a bit odd. I'm standing by my sphinn of this post, because I still do think it's a revelant critique of the community and something that all of us should remember while we're out there sphinning content.
"I still do think it's a revelant critique"
How?
Nothing is argued or reasoned in that post; I don't see how it (technically) can be a critique then.
What's odd is you taking it serious and submitting it here of all places.
If you agree with the premise of Sphinn being a "party for "me too" attention mongering marketers with interchangeable headlines" then that puts you in the position of wasting your time, no?
Or do you mean to say you find value in participating in a community with "no original thought and very little value-added content"?
Nor do I understand why you would want me to remember a post that states that as a participant in this community calls you too, Syzlak, one of the "attention whores". That's just disrespectful and you know it.
Pft. I sphinn content because I LIKE it. Not because of WHO sphunn it or because I have no mind of my own. When a submission reaches the frontpage it means the community has spoken. That's how a democracy works. On the same token, there's a desphinn button for a reason. If one doesn't agree with or like the story then they should excercise their right to vote it down. Just like I did, with this one. Since sphinn.com has no control over what does and doesn't reach the hp, the author is basically saying she doesn't like the sphinn community then, since it is THEY who decide. Or maybe its democracy she has a problem with?
Edit: I'm trying to desphinn this but it won't let me. No matter how many characters I use it tells me it's to short. How's that for irony?
Ok Ruud, fair enough.
Maybe saying that it's a fair critique was a bit too broad. What I should say is that the critique being made about the insurgance of "attenting grabbing" posts is relevant. That's at least what I understood the post to be. Sure, it could've been better written and clarified that not all of us are "attention mongering marketers with interchangeable headlines," oh well. I'm not congratulating this article for condemning all of us, but I do believe there are some out there that sphinn for the sake of notoriety. Next time I'll write the damn critique myself and have the lines more clearly defined.
And maybe it is wrong of me to take this seriously, perhaps it's more important to just sphinn self-congratulatory posts people make about their "gone hot" sphinns, stuff that SteveMichael tells me to sphinn in my inbox or people's personal/corporate changes that don't have a lick to do with Search.
@ ruud - huh?
*cough* http://sphinn.com/story/31737 *cough*cough* That seems to fit into some of the criticism, er, opinion or rant or whatever (?) that collective is throwing out there.
"Next time I'll write the damn critique myself and have the lines more clearly defined." That's wonderful!
At least we'll have an idea of who you are and we'll recognize you as being a Sphinner with personal experience here.
@cre8pc - :)
Ermm...I get fewer "begs" for votes here than I do on any other social network I've been a part of...
As for sphinning because of the user who submitted, yeah, people who regularly submit quality stuff get looked at a bit more. But we relatively frequently get new people hitting frontpage.
This person is just bitter methinks.
Dull, dull post repeating the same old crap about the quality of Sphinn submissions dipping. As a community grows there is bound to be more noise.
... and if you're taking the trouble to make anonymous blog posts at least make them incisive and vitriolic for maximum entertainment value. Far too tame for good gossip - name some names if you feel that strongly.
"What was once a great resource highlighting important stories from new writers, transformed into a party for "me too" attention mongering marketers with interchangeable headlines."
Sphinn is noisy. But the Sphinn community isn't to blame. The front page represents what everyone likes - which usually means you won't like most of the submissions on the front page unless your taste is in total sync with the masses.
The root of the problem is Sphinn's lack of personalization.
Halfdeck, allowing you to make Sphinn more personalized is next up, promise :)
