The 2nd most popular submission to Sphinn at this moment in time is by Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz. In the blog post relating to the story Rand mentioned the following:

"Participate heavily and everyone in the search world will soon know your name"

I’m a huge fan of Sphinn, I check on it everyday as it bodes to be very useful to me. I would love to submit stories at a higher rate because there is a lot of quality content out there. But how can you not be seen as a ’spammer’ or someone who is ’abusing the system’ when your face is on a few of the latest entries of the whats new page?

I don’t use Sphinn to become a name in the industry, but i do like to share my findings from my own sites and other sites. Is it just me that is a little wary of ’submitting too much’.

UPDATE Please read all before commenting :). I’m not here to ’abuse the system’

I don’t think there’s any reason to submit more than once or twice a day. It doesn’t seem to be strictly against the rules, as long as you’re waiting a while between submissions, though: # Please don’t submit more than two stories in a row, in order to help preserve variety in the What’s New area. # Please don’t submit stories more than a few days old unless you feel they are of exceptional quality that have gone somehow unnoticed by the greater online community. So if they’re relevant and you really want to submit a lot, I guess that’s your prerogative.

I’ve already got to the point where I don’t want to see any more "10-bullet-point how-to" posts...

You definitely want to only submit stuff that’s sphinn-worthy, rather than just submit for the sake of getting your name out there. If you submit really high quality stuff, people will start to see you as a great resource. Unless it’s an exceptionally big news day, probably one or two a day is a good rule of thumb I would think.

Becoming known in any industry takes time, writing good articles and participation among your peers will get your name out there in due time. I don’t think by abusing the sphinn system will have any good come out of it. I would only sphinn an article a day, maybe two if they are real good. Always check to see if something similar is not already been posted. Steve

Viper, I don’t think that either Vanessa OR SEMSpot are implying that you a) are only using the site to get your name out, or b) are abusing the system. They are simply discussing the topic that you brought up. Don’t protest too much :P

Yeah, you can get "known" in the SEO world that way - but make sure you don’t simply get know as a pest or a bore or both. As most people will argue that they’re suffering from information overflow these days, less is often more. Quality, not quantity, simple as that.

Yep, Burgo is correct. I think we’re all just generally discussing the topic. This thread is probably interesting for people new to Sphinn who aren’t sure of the best way to go about submitting stuff.

It is interesting, but sometimes the reverse can be true as well. Today for instance someone submitted one of my posts that I wrote before the weekend. If I had submitted it myself before the weekend then it is quite likely it would have received more votes from people who first read it then. Sometimes there is a barrier to submission of a post as it takes a little more time, or people are a little nervous submitting content for the first time. People also worry about their Sphinn stats - will the submission have a positive or negative effect on their percentage of post that have gone "popular". I think there might also be a slight barrier regarding submitting content that is opinionated. Some people might not submit a story that is more critical, in a Threadwatch kind of way, but they are quite willing to vote on it once it is submitted.

Another question it raises is whether it’s smart to submit something right after you’ve written it, no matter when that might be. I submitted something late Friday night and it’s been ignored, for the most part. I’d like to think that if I’d waited until Monday morning it would be huge. But then again, maybe it got what it deserved.

All social sites have users that post more often than others, it isn’t a problem as long as the posts are quality, relevant content. The ’make your name in the industry’ line - while partly true - is more of a method of encouraging use of Sphinn than a genuine way to make your name. If you post a lot of rubbish you’ll make a name for yourself, but it won’t be a good one.

The answer is definitely no, since I’m not seeing enough new stuff on the home page...:D
