To me the linkerati are the connectors, they are ones who have ultimately created the web. Creating connections to related and sometimes unrelated pieces of information dotted around the web. And thus, they are all powerful and very popular. If you can persuade the linkerati in your sector, you will own that sector.

the not serious part - I can create links and connections...maybe I’m all powerful and very popular, too; maybe I am a memeber and don’t know it?  I can’t take credit for creating the web - that’s been claimed already ;)   the serious part - But seriously, I think of the term ’linkerati’ as more of a circumstance than a who.  When a link becomes recognized for some reason (it isn’t necessarily for good) and gets numerous prestigous inbound links that create a multitude of common inbound links, then I think of it as being picked up by the linkerati.
