People don’t read online. Nor do they scan. They extract ideas, resonating with some and disregarding others. They do so at breakneck speed, only slowing down when a particular idea truly warrants it.

Oh yes it does, the "back" button is but a finger twitch away...

Great writing makes it easier to scan...

Great writing matters. It's not essential when you got a unique idea to spread, but in a saturated market, good writing skill is a brick in the wall. Often blog posts rehash the same old idea by wrapping it in a shiny new package, and that's often more than enough to sell yourself on social networks like Sphinn.

I do get Skellie's point that even if you're not the greatest writer in the world, that shouldn't stop you from blogging. But if your writing sucks AND your message is tired and old, you're up the creek without a paddle.

This article saddens me, because it will encourage even more bad writers to get online and write.  The awful writing out there already is bad enough -- we certainly don't need anymore.

I think we may start going the other way in the future, where you can no longer get by with bad writing, although I think we're still have a long way to go before that happens.

If people weren't so accepting of bad writing (or perhaps they don't know the difference?) it wouldn't be allowed as much as it is now.

The irony is that Skelliwag's post was indeed, great writing!  It would be awesome if more people wrote that way.

Agreed, to a point. Different people have different ideas about what "bad" writing is. For example, we have all met grammar police where a small grammar mistake or spelling goof and people dismiss your whole article entirely.

That's true, Chris. But on the other hand, most articles and blog posts I see these days could certainly use the once-over by a proofreader. Or even by the original author.

Has nobody ever heard editing anymore?
