The SEO Community shouldn't wonder about their reputation when "experts" advocate deceitful tactics.

Yeah it is kind of funny with Danny and others talking about 'standards' and respect for the industry only to see this CRAP. Kudos.... I shall be taking up this issue as well this week.... great find.

I hadn't read all of the 'experts' ideas and now I shall certainly take a closer look and see what other garbage is in there. Yeee haaa.... I feel a rant coming on.

When I read this last week I began wondering how long it would be before we started seeing people complaign about some of these tactics :) It should make for some good controversial link bait for some rants..

"advocate deceitful tactics."

The tactic Peter talked about is no more deceitful than paid links, yet the SEO community stands solidly behind paid links. In fact, what Peter did sounds more interesting than opening up a TLA and adding a few links in your shopping cart. Is it spammy? Sure. So what?

There are a number of shades of grey in some of the other entries too.  However the colors are defined by Google, so it's a very fuzzy discussion, since Google doesn't give clear guidelines.

@Halfdeck
So what? how about these:
- so the consumer (search engine user) is decieved into thinking the site is more relevant than it really is
- so competitors lose rankings due to a practice that basically adds up to telling lies to the search engine and thus the searcher
- so SEO companies that choose to operate above board are at a disadvantage
- so trusted seo "experts," the ones that are supposed to be models of good practice, are basically saying anything is fair game
- so all of this combines to continually pull the seo industry further away from legitimacy, as all parties involved must move deeper into the "grey" areas just to keep up.

@ bwelford
I agree that Google is to blame for this mess. The link-based page rank system needs to be abandoned in my mind. Clearly that's not going to happen anytime soon, but if the SEO Industry wants to be well regarded as professionals, they should act as such.
