Rand provides a recap of the (seemingly heated) "Are Paid Links Evil" session from SES San Jose. Speakers at the session included Matt Cutts, Michael Gray, Todd Malicoat, Todd Friesen, Greg Boser and Andy Baio.

Prepare yourself to nod, sigh and pound your desk in an angry or euphoric manner.

It seems to have followed an entirely predictable path. Unstoppable Forces Meeting Immoveable Objects. Your guess is as good as mine as to how this all gets resolved.

The "paid links" debate isn’t even a debate - it’s posturing. Seriously, there are better things to spend your time on. Such as buying links. :D

Exactly Brian. This "debate" is like smashing your head repeatedly against a brick wall. Google will never change their policy against paid links. If you know how to buy links intelligently, their policy shouldn’t matter to you.

Have to agree with Halfdecks comment, however there is no reason why the smoke and mirrors about paid linkage doesnt have to be removed. I personally have no problems with Google clamping down on paid linkage to a certain degree IF they were more clear in their motives and what is and what is not OK At present the ’paid links are bad’ is just too ambiguous in implementation.
