Great artice. Especially, "let your users switch versions" and make it easy for them to do so! This issue was so frustrating for me last week.

Thanks for this. Last week i was searching for information about however could not find much about how search engines actually treat multiple language versions for duplicate content when on one domain.

It's also great to know that you can set up individual country targets for your site's different language sub folders in Webmaster tools. Many thanks Patrick!
