I've seen people use this to hide under the trademark radar, too - via keyword insertion and geotargeting.

Also useful is using geotargeting to advertise everywhere *except* your competitor's location.

@ DanThies You have to be careful with that approach because you might lose out on smore traffic than expected.  If Google can't pinpoint a user's location (like AOL users), they don't get served ANY geo-targeting ads unless the query includes a geo term like a city or state name.

@doubleohd You can exclude certain areas instead.  That probably works better.

nmazza, your intuition is correct!


My name is Jason Miller, and I presented this very topic at the PPC Summit in Boston on March 3rd, 2008. The same PPC Summit Nickycakes has blogged that he attended. I was a featured speaker there, on the first day, which Nickycakes points out is the only day he attended. Additionally, there are only two tracks at the conference. The topic was Writing and Testing AdCopy.  Here is the response I left for NickyCakes on his blog. It is not my intention to embarrass him unneccessarily, however, because he added not a single thing to the idea, I feel compelled to pull his pants down on this. Sorry, but I can't sit and watch my work being casually stolen by someone who claims to be 'a reformed blackhat' and takes glea in bashing others while casually ripping me off in the process.

Maybe he will learn some day that the web does not make one immune to the powers of the Truth, and it's uncanny ability to shine a light on those too lazy to pay it forward. Or maybe, as nmazza noted, he will learn to be a more master forger. I suspect the latter.
 
If anyone would like a copy of my presentation slide and notes from PPC Summit regarding this, I'd be happy to provide them. This is the 4th conference I've spoken at for PPC Summit and the 4th time I presented this topic. However, to futher dispel any question this was not directly ripped from me, I provided some links below.

Poor Nicky obvioulsy wouldn't know that while I presented this at PPC Summit, I had already written about it in August of '07, and presented at 4 other PPC Summits. See the links I've included below.

PS I appreciate you making your own geotarget screenshot, even if it’s identical. I suppose you couldn't use my slide from the manual as it has the PPC Summit logo on it. What a wonderful blog you have Nick, and how wonderful of you to share all your insights about companies that you think are scams, while you casually rip off conference materials and call them your own.

@Jason - geo targeting with the competition in mind is nothing new. It's paid search marketing 101. While the author may have been at your conference and that's where he got the idea it's not unthinkable that he picked up the idea in one of dozens of other places.

ps - are you the same person that just spoke about "search relationship organization"? I've asked in a few places but haven't received any feedback, was that a serious discussion or were you kidding?
