Well thought out, researched and written. Not specific to web marketing but there are plenty of current and future experts here and everywhere that can benefit.
IMO the real experts are the real trailblazers - people who are constantly seeking new solutions to old problems.
All too often, not least in the SEO industry, some people are considered experts because they used to be trailblazers - but since then are simply sticking to old solutions for old problems. The internet is too dynamic for that to really be accetpable, IMO, unless you've already become a "safe" company based on old experience, rather than new creatives. 2c.
Some excellent points. Perhaps I might also add an expert should have integrity. That means being completely honest with those who would like to use you as an expert. Ok at this moment and where they are you're the best expert they can get. You then have to make sure that the resulting experience works well for them.
@Tim - Thanks. I'm still figuring out how I might fit here. First try.
@iBrian - Yes, oh yes - you've read my mind.
@bwelform - Without a doubt. And you have to know what you don't know just as much as what you know to have integrity - imho.
That article says "“Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.“
but I would say
“Real knowledge is to know the extent of your opponent's ignorance.“
which can be morphed into
“Real knowledge is to know the extent the client's ignorance.“
which sounds disrespectful, unfortunately.
But what is real? How do you define "real"? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.
"The fool who thinks he is a wise man demonstrates folly; the fool who thinks himself a fool demonstrate wisdom." - Buddha
On second thought, isn't this the basis for the success of wikipedia? Everyone who doesn't know about something finds Wikipedia hugely authoritative and helpful, when in fact it is often wrong, incomplete, or otherwise misleading.
Simply knowing more about something that another person doesn't necessarily make someone an expert. Being an expert is having a proven understanding, knowledge and/or skill in respect to a particular area that is significantly greater than others in that area.
Of course "expert" is a relative definition, but just because it is a relative definition doesn't mean it can be loosely applied.
