#10 is my favorite.
I love the sites that say "$750 to rank #1 in 25 major search engines for 50 keywords"
"Search engine submission", people still buy that?
# 10 - it is true that there are many charlatans in this profession, but I can bring a site to # 1 in Google for every keyword. If you don't know how you have no right to call those who can Bad SEO Firms.
@emanuel, You're right, we don't have the right to call those who can bring a site to #1 in Google for every keyword Bad SEO Firms, but we sure have the right to say firms that say they can are bad.
Directly from Google: No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
If you're talking about paid search, you can't even guarantee that, due to the ad quality score, besides Eric is talking about seo. Please don't tell people you can bring a site to #1 in Google for every keyword, it makes the rest of us look bad.
Great Post, there are so many seo companies out there today doing stuff that is totally outdated and just plain "don't work"...
On my blog "One Way Link Building", I'm doing some experiments with Web2.0 and showing people how to use the Search Engines as just a single component of your online marketing strategy...
The good elevgen ways to know an SEO firm.
My theory of SEO consulting:
If someone can get #1 for tough keywords, they shouldn't be taking any clients.
Sorry - this is another of those lists which is inaccurate.
5 - same method with clients - in link development work, the same sets of working strategies need to be applied across the board.
11 - confidentiality is everything. Some people have this weird idea that it's fine to communicate everything you do, and that there are no potential repercussions from this.
The premise of the list is "our method must be right, so everyone who works differently must be wrong".
2c.
Added: Also, microsites - if you build user experience around a single keyword, strong ranking and conversion potential.
"If someone can get #1 for tough keywords, they shouldn't be taking any clients."
Although I do see what you're getting at, I can tell you from experience that clients can be more profitable than going it alone. Even if you're #1 for the biggest gambling and finance terms, there's always going to be someone with much better margins/commission rates than you - and that's where you can make more money.
@ semscholar: Let me repeat it - I can bring a website to # 1 in Google's organic results for every keyword.
Directly from Google: No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
Directly from Me: No one can say what I can't guarantee, Google included.
The fact that Google say that none can guarantee a # 1 ranking in Google does not make their statement true, unless they start showing randomly empty # 1 listings in some of their SERPs.
@ pocketSEO: You wrote "If someone can get #1 for tough keywords, they shouldn't be taking any clients." I don't know about you but for tough keywords I need the client's very large, and sometimes largest, SEO budget.
The reason for the common difficulty to understand how one can honestly guarantee a # 1 ranking is the common practice of providing SEO price quotes. You often guess in advance that your price quote won't be sufficient for the workhours and other resources required to achieve the # 1 ranking, but you compete with other SEO firms. And the client is too often so stupid that he believes he can expect you to excel and be # 1, against anyone else, and at the same time pick up the cheapest price quote that you have provided.
For my own opinion a firm that promises like heaven and earth would only result to cost to thousands. Quality and Unique content pays alot.
