A new kind of stealing is upon us - stealing of avatars. It's happened to Muhammad Saleem before, and it's happened again. His avatar on digg is being copied. How important are avatars? How much of your brand is in them? And are they really worth copying?

Of course, try and ignore the typo of the word IdentiTy...

It's early, and I wrote IdentiFy ... *chuckle*

Thanks Jonathan -- I didn't want to throw myself at the mercy of the Sphinn community, but I will if need be! *laugh*

So you're just talking about stealing other users' avatars, not grabbing images and using them as avatars, right? I have pretty frizzy hair, but that's not me over there on the left.

I stopped using my Cheshire Cat avatar, that I have used for several years, on most forums and social networks since too many people were using it also.

The worst offender was on Netscape!

@qwerty -- I'm talking about both in the article. The idea that people use avatars other than themselves is certainly gaining in popularity and attention, and it seems that leads in part, to stealing...

Maybe I'm slow, but I thought that using your real picture as an avatar was relatively new, not the other way 'round.. Besides, how can you lay claim to what looks like an ace of spades??

Stealing a photo and declaring it you is one thing.. Using a similar generic image is something else entirely..

Oh, and I tend to change my avatar more often than my socks.. It's a mood thing..
