From where I'm sitting, Marios is wrong and his friend is spot on.
@Kalena Totally agree. I think in-house might be down, but independents are easily picking up accounts right now. There's a big world of people / companies that have just been doing PPC and haven't been doing SEO and now want to save on their keyword spend. I'm also seeing a very big jump in one time consulting among small companies.
There's a rule of thumb stating that only 10-15% of all job openings are publically advertised. Lots of firms / companies are looking but aren't necessarily advertising for positions. Also, a lot of people I've talked to are looking for talent and would hire any good people that come available...but they can't find anyone.
The market is molten hot and will likely get hotter.
I just took an in house position in december, but I'm still getting tons of solicitations from recruiters.
agree with charlie and todd ... also if we look at how newer regions are getting into Internet and related businesses, this discussion would seem a no-contest..especially with regards to emerging makets where a lot of startups are building themselves up primarily based out of the net.. and most of their prime concern is to bring in as much search traffic to their sites (I get many such requests..)
I couldnt belive the number of booths at SES NY that had "we're hiring" flyers in them. more than I'd seen before at SES Jan Jose or Pubcon - in fact I dont recall seeing any such thing at either previous show.
In the Central Florida area SEO jobs are few and far between. Those jobs that are currently out there are typically for senior level (manager/director). I think cities that have a larger number of "Internet" related companies understand the importance of SEO and it's value, thus larger demand for SEO's.
There is always room for business as a consultant within this field no matter where you are located. We see plenty of room within this growing industry!
@All -- Thanks for your comments both here and on my blog! It seems like most people disagree and feel that the SEO/SEM job market is indeed growing rather than remaining steady as I suspect.
This is one of those areas where I'm happy to be proven wrong :-)
