Of course, even if it's only the spiders who notice you're there, that can't be bad either. :)
An insightful post -- especially like the "It's not just the linkbait" section. Thanks for posting.

I have just got into this social media thing. I just signed up for sphinn and digg. This is all really new to me, so this is great information for me as a newb.
I'm going to link drop, but I think it's relevant given people are voting that social media is important. Sphinn/Search Engine Land have our SMX Social Media Marketing show coming up next month in Southern California. I'm running the show, so you can expect me to be biased, but there's some seriously good content designed to get anyone up to speed and successful in the range of social media opportunities out there. You can also see my Preview: Search Engine Land's SMX Social Media Marketing Conference post for a more detailed description of what to expect.
"But some people don’t see the full picture of WHY it is the popular thing to do"
I certainly don't, and this article did nothing to help me with that, I am afraid!
"And who doesn’t want all that extra traffic into a site, even if it is a huge burst over a period of an hour or two?"
Lots of people! hosts cut people off if they go over their bandwidth, which th Digg effect can do. Seems to me a losing proposition to have your site offline for any reason.
To me, the SMM advice is so generic as to be useless. Apart from very large companies, I have no idea who shpould try this, nor really any way to measure expected returns.
Having traffic for the sake of having traffic is worthless and I think the article does a good point in addressing that. If you just care about traffic to have it then go get an autosurfer. I think what is beginning to happen and is an issue as of late is people that vote for content on a social site, but never actually visit the page of the post much less absorb the content.
As people begin to get more and more involved in Social Media and the stakes continue to rise this is an issue that has to be addressed one way or another.
