Excellent video regarding the best way to use social sites such as Stumbleupon, delicious, etc, from Jane Copland of SEOmoz. Jane really knows her stuff.
If you really want to get stuck into social media I suggest watching this three times and taking notes. Also SEOmoz are bringing out a social media guide for their premium section.

Tarzan says "Jane really does know her stuff." I liked how she mentioned that you shouldnt rush to be the first in Yahoo Answers. Its not always a race to be first (so to speak).
Maybe Jane has some sock puppet accounts on SU, but she doesnt seem to have taken much interest in the social side. http://janeseomoz.stumbleupon.com/friends/ Rand also seems fairly insular on SU though he has stumbled a lot more http://randfish.stumbleupon.com/ Matt/Oatmeal also doesnt seem to be a heavy SU user, other than sites he works on http://oatmeal.stumbleupon.com/ There was no mention of the "Reviews of this page" button on the SU toolbar which is far easier to remember than a URL. You will also see a referrer URL to any review in your tracking stats, though that will first of all take you to an advertising squeeze page on which there will only be a link to the review of your site if you received a review (it is possible to be stumbled without a review) The MOZers might have a lot of SU experience from the receiving end, but there is very little evidence of them being active on SU. I do hope they got someone else to write the report, at least the part about using SU. I dont class myself as a highly active Stumbler, but the people who use SU legitimately tend to build up friends, both one directional and mutual
Those who know me at SU know that I have a lot of authority there. (Check out the Buzz page at http://buzz.stumbleupon.com or any category page for subjects I link in there and youll see what I mean by that.) What Jane said about SU and what I do there have very little in common. Perhaps the difference is what my intent there is versus what some might have in mind. The tip about going to http://stumbleupon.com/url/domainname.com to see reviews on any site youre interested in is well worth noting. Thanks for the links Andy. Perhaps how to SU is another topic to add to my enormous list of future projects. Hopefully someone else who is far more familiar with their system will tackle that in the interim. In the meantime, if anyone wants to know about SU you can ask me. I will know who else to ask if you want to know anything I havent already figured out. One other comment about what Jane said in the video. Many of us DO go to the site every day. I apparently dont use it as intended as I rarely Stumble randomly as I would guess many do.
I have stumbleupon pretty much locked onto Social media and seo keywords so I enjoy what I see and if i like it then I give it a thumbs-up Ill probably never become a top user because these are small niches in the majority but I enjoy it so why not?
Well this is interesting. I have always found Mozzers a good source of info and found the video interesting enough to spin. I mean they must know their stuff if they are charging $10k for a minimum contract they must know what they are talking about? Mustnt they? But if they are not stumbling is this like getting diet tips from a fat person. If they use Sphinn it would be interesting to hear a reply.
Well theres certainly no doubt they know their information on SEO To be fair anyone could have said what was said in the video (regarding SU), I guess it just shows they may not have found it out for themselves. Interesting discussion
If they use Sphinn it would be interesting to hear a reply. ^^ Just wanted to add that rand has the 2nd top submission on here so they are signed up :)
SEOmoz could have a direct line to God and youd still say we didnt go to church enough.
haha Jane, that was pretty funny...for you (j/k) ;)
Watch it, Glen, or Ill post a link to YOUR video :P
hahahaha. I wish the commenting voting worked on my end. You cant anyway because people would be too p*ssed at us going off-topic ;) HAH! (Please dont post the link) ;)
In defense of (people I dont know at SEOmoz)... in my past agency-life experience I always would create secondary accounts at places like G,Y,SU,del and when working on clients accounts Id be active within those accounts all day long not in my own personal or business accounts. So, Im just guessing, but maybe youre looking in the wrong place when you suggest the Mozzers arent active in StumbleUpon.
Thanks Tim. Digging, Stumbling and bookmarking things from a known SEOs account would be silly. "The MOZers might have a lot of SU experience from the receiving end, but there is very little evidence of them being active on SU. I do hope they got someone else to write the report, at least the part about using SU." I cant work out if this is naivety or deliberate antagonism. Either way, I guess I should go and do all those things that are more important on a Sunday morning than argue with negative nancies on the Internet.
The evidence I have seen from Jane through posting at the SEOmoz blog and the stuff she has produced on Drivl leads me to believe she does know what she is talking about and deserves listening to. The fact that she is a Mozzer should also carry weight and authority. I am going to be signing up for the premium account to get my hands on the report, it may be stuff I already know but I know its going to come from a reputable source. This is a weird thread. Come on, group hug. ;)
Andy - I promise you that Jane definitely knows what shes doing when it comes to StumbleUpon. We dont actively engage in much "stumbling" ourselves, with our own profiles, due to the social media anti-SEO attitude, but if you read the guide, I think youre going to be very impressed with the wealth of tactics and techniques that Janes assembled - Ive worked on multiple stumble campaigns, both paid and free, and still learned a lot from her in-depth look.
Many people create and use social profiles not affiliated with there real name or company. All the antis on the sites would tear you apart while trying to promote your clients. Andy I figured you would assume the same and know they would not use there real SU names. Steve
The first line of my comment was "Maybe Jane has some sock puppet accounts on SU" The Mozzer accounts however are being used to Stumble known SEOmoz properties, so I would still expect the profiles to be a little more built up than they currently are. As an example posts on Drivl and Mingle2 were stumbled from Janes account where her 2 listed friends are Joe Whyte and Michael Gray. I would honestly say that Digg is far more anti-SEO than Stumbleupon, and Mozzer accounts on Digg have far more friends (though less than I remember in the past) From what I have seen SU is more anti-gaming SU articles than anti-seo or sem, even if you are talking about offering SU users a better SU experience by specific tracking and tailoring pages. I found it unusual enough to comment, I dont think Rand has exclusive use of a "spidey sense" "SEOmoz could have a direct line to God and youd still say we didnt go to church enough." I reference SEOmoz plenty of times with nice SEO friendly links, I honestly expected a reply with less "Drivl" Rand there are multiple sides to Stumbleupon, and I am sure SEOmoz have a vast experience in what content works best, and monitoring the "StumbleUpon" effect. Such information can be extremely valuable. I look forward to any review you do of the report Lyndon (or anyone else)
