From post, "While some small business owners are on board with the idea of search engine optimization many still aren’t. However, even with those who aren’t quite on board yet, there’s an increasing awareness of this thing called search marketing and small business represents a fertile market for SEOs. The difficulty is the increasing awareness still hasn’t reached the point of realistic expectations and costs for many small business owners. So how does an SEO sell services to a market who’s needs and wants are often out of alignment with realistic expectations and pricing?"

Answer. Affordability.

You are not going to get $300.00 an hour from the local small business owner for SEO services. Your pricing must be in line with the understanding that SEO for local is relatively easy right now and therefore your fees for SEO services will be greatly reduced on many clients.

It all adds up though and reputation with some word of mouth can get you some pretty sweet, easily managable local clients needing a litaral Internet Marketing outsourced solution.

I've been trying to sell my mom and pop on SEO services. I already rank #1 for their last name and for a small fee I may be persuaded to throw them a link or two. :)

Seriously, bartimus has it right. Make it affordable and educate as to the benefits of a long term approach. I've witnessed some some very happy relationships between SB owners and SEOs working this way.

Hahahhahaha!  I love it!

I agree with affordable and also with the education aspect... I also like to add a plan of action that the SB owner can follow after our time together is completed.  This action plan also includes a list of do NOT do's!

Great article!

One of the issues with respect to small businesses and SEO is they have all to often been sold a pup with their website. If it needs some re-development they can be suspicious and assume you are simply after more work from them.

Just a thought ;)
