We mustn't neglect the small local business owners who are trying to show up in the search results against larger national companies. The best way for local companies to show up is through the local search results. This tactic will help these companies to rise above their local competition.

It's not just Google, Yahoo! Local came right out and said that reviews are part of the algo - " and through a new, updated algorithm, we’re making sure that search results take your ratings and reviews into account." (This excerpt taken from the Yahoo!Local Blog.)

Yes, this is important. But so few people pay attention to these details. There are other things you can do too. Might have to write a post myself.

@dalka - Please do. I think this topic is under-covered.

Dalka,

If you do write a post, let me know and I'll be happy to link to your post. This goes for anyone who adds to this thought. Send me an email and let me know. Thanks.

BigOak: I also have had possible success with G Maps rankings via having had reviews added.

There is too little commentary on this topic. More comments would generate a better understanding of how G Maps works.

I did say possible above as I am not sure if that is what impacted rankings w/in G Maps. So again I ask for far more commentary and experience.

I'll add this. It doesn't really matter if it helps your ranking or not, it will help conversions so everyone should be thinking about it and making an effort towards positive reviews. I am will show any results that are definitive, but we do so many things for our clients, it can be hard to say which "does the trick" so to speak.
