I think there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain by making Desphunn Comments just another way of making a regular Comment. If they’re in the normal flow and appear in Latest Comments, then they will encourage discussion, which presumably is the reason for their existence.

... plus the desphinns are often the best comments.

YES! It’s been mentioned before, but I cannot agree more.  Maybe even just add another tab to the  Sphinn live page to follow despinns.

Hey i suddenly see Desphinns in Live feed. Is that new?  Way to Go.  We’ll get equal visibility soon.  I can feel it in my bones. :)

I completely agree. With discussion, there’s uaually opportunity to improve and learn a thing or two.

True discussions does allow opposing thoughts or idea. It’s how we weigh facts or seeing the pros and cons.

IMO a Desphinn shouldn’t even demand a comment.It’s not as if a Sphinn demands a comment to justify why you Sphunn an article - so I really don’t see why a comment should be required with a Desphinn.

And the 50 character limit on Desphinns drives me insane!!Please, if it’s so important to force comments on Desphinns, at least do it to Sphinns as well - or else remove the comment requirement altogether please!

I would also put my hand in for desphinn comments to be in with normal comments, but perhaps the introduction of requiring a comment before sphinning of course this would mean you would lose the majority of your membership but the up side you might have a half decent conversations and people might have to think about why they are sphinning it and not just because person X told them to.

I think this is a great idea.  Some people will add a main comment as well as the (required) desphinn comment to explain their actions and promote the discussion, but this is the exception rather than the rule and merging deshinn comments into the main feed would do a much better job of this without the need to manually repeat your opinion.

I’d worry that forcing a comment for regular sphinns would result in a lot of "Great article" or "I agree" fluff comments, which don’t necessarily add to real discussion. Putting a higher burden of proof on a desphinn, on the other hand, seems fair to me. If a person really has nothing to say, they can simply refrain from giving a positive sphinn, whereas a desphinn almost begs for a conversation.The idea of merging desphinn comments into the regular comments thread is a great idea. Would definitely promote a dialogue than the current setup.

48 sphinns so far and not a single word on the post by a mod.  Some community effort would be nice.

@JohnWeb - It’s now got to 53 sphinns.  Perhaps it’s something we said. :(
