Intriguing thought, but who will police this and keep the spammers out?
playin with it.... lurking the boards... will letcha know :0)
22 sphinns and not on front page...hmmm...did they up the number again?
Thats exactly what i was wondering, DazzlinDonna!
Tadaaaaa - 23 is the magic number ;)
Thanks for the heads up, I set up an account and was testing it. Its definetly worth a bookmark!
The problem with stumpedia is that it has so little in it. As a search engine it is useless because so many searches yield no results. I just did searches for some words - dishes, Neptune, sneakers, Argentina, mutual funds - and got no results. And many searches bring up just the Wikipedia page, which I could have more easily found by going to wikipedia.com.I know its still a new project, but I dont see why anyone would use Stumpedia unless they were trying to list their own site. Oh, a search for SEO brings up 28 results. 28 for SEO, but 0 for Argentina or Neptune? This is not a useful search engine.I find del.icio.us to be a good site for searching sometimes, and it is similar in that ordinary people list bookmarks. But at least there they have a large number of users and a large index of bookmarks, so there is a good chance you can find something useful.
like mahalo, clearly stumpedia is an attempt to solve the relevancy issue that exists with the purely algorithmic search engines. i think its too early to say if its useful or not since, as crimsongirl states, its too new and theres not nearly enough in there. its unclear to me why theyre relying 100% on user link submission. the problem for them will be adoption, and theyll only get the volume they need if they provide value. it could be a catch 22 since, as a content producer, theres little reason for me to submit my sites until they have good traffic, and as a user theres little reason for me to use the service until they have good content.
Thank you all for your interest in Stumpedia and comments. We certainly recognize the lack of search results. Our approach has been to market to SEO professionals, content producers, webmasters and all those who may ultimately benefit from search traffic and find the Stumpedia concept interesting enough to contribute. The next stage would be to market to general users. We definitely agree that we have a long journey ahead, but we are in this for the long haul. At one time or another there was little in google and wikipedia also. ;-)
This is an awesome idea. Did any of you read the article in Inc about threadless.com? Let the users drive the train...
