It’s a well known fact that linking is a key aspect of how a site performs in the SERPs. It’s also well understood that securing good links based on merit isn’t easy, and I’m not suggesting it should it be.

We all should support this message to Google. It is of course tough to figure out how simple computer algorithms can distinguish between the goats described here and the sheep who are also going out trying to get a host of sometimes irrelevant links. Perhaps if the Links gurus come out more forcefully against putting efforts into getting links any way you can, that might make Google's task easier.
