Apparently the line has been drawn in the sand by Microsoft’s Steve Balmer in a letter sent to Yahoo today. That line is three weeks to see some kind of progress in Microsoft’s bid to take over Yahoo!

Screw Microsoft! I say we ban MSN.com, Live.com and set all links pointing to such with rel="nofollow". IMO there were only three decent search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN. Now there are only two, Google and Yahoo. If MS succeeds there will only be Google.

Actually, I think Live’s algo is better than Yahoo’s.  More googlesque, but it’s a watered down worser version of Google’s.  That thing I’m worried about is Microsoft trashing all of Yahoo’s backlink data.  Microsoft just doesn’t know how to brand Live, so it will fail, but if Powerset ever actually gets released, I think that has a chance of making a dent.  If that thing does what it’s supposed to do, people will use it.

It’s the monopoly that I’m worried about. Google seems to have a different set of values than MS. You can tell by how they are reacting to this very situation of the buyout. As a search marketer I care more about market share rather than the subtle details that make one a slightly better search engine. I really don’t like the idea of MS controlling the majority of the search market and the operating system market. I don’t see ANY good that can come of it. I really dislike the hostile attitude from MS.

I don’t like the hostile attitude and the idea of only 2 companies controlling the landscape either.  I really hope Powerset swoops in and saves the day.  I doubt they will, but the company is backed by Larry Page’s brother and the co-founder of Paypal, so maybe it will be a legit competitor, unlike SearchMe and some of the new engines.  The sibling rivalry factor of Powerset may actually make it the real deal.  Imagine if it really does what it’s supposed to do, and there’s a search engine that  actually answers questions like a person.  There will be a huge rush of people checking it out.The algo better be decent.  There’s certainly enough money being pumped into it.  I wonder if Google is secretly working on a version of their search engine that’s natural language too, so when powerset enters pubic bata, Google will just roll out their own natural language version of google.

The trouble is, Microsoft really don;t know how to run a successful internet company, and Yahoo used to but kind of lost it. Google, however, does know how to run a successful internet company and keeps pushing to maintain this. The BBC commentary on this is actually really good:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7222199.stm"<font size="2">If Yahoo agrees to the deal with Microsoft, it will be a shotgun marriage, but it will be Google holding the shotgun.</font>"

Unfortunately, this deal is inevitable.
