I've been thinking for a while now that many of us SEO professionals use the term "linkbait" simply because there isn’t a better term that is universally accepted within the industry. It's broadly over-used, with many definitions. We need a better term that represents what we're actually doing, and makes more sense to clients.

We use link magnet as something entirely different than link bait.  Link bait is usually short term, designed to catch attention but not necessarily quality traffic or links.  Link magnets are more targeted and attracted simply by virtue of their existence and usefulness, links that are relevant to your page.

We consider the Search Engine Relationship Chart a link magnet.  People link to it because it's useful, not because it's baiting anyone.

Both link bait and link magnets have their place, but I think they're serving different masters.

Interesting thoughts Susan, but the way you describe it "link bait" is not really useful as the engines are now pretty good at discerning quality links. If the terms are separated, then at a minimum "link magnet" would be the better term and what we mean in SEO for developing quality links to enhance a site's standing with the search engines.

@Susan: I really liked how you guys are using link magnet as a term and I agree that's how it should be used more in the industry. That's a great example.
