Thanks for sharing these SEO Practices. It'sgood to always be focused and know what you have to do and target to get to your goal.
Like some ideas about the article but I am sure that there is something very important missing over there: to develope in house SEO, the whole management team has to agree. I work in house SEO and there were 10 managers. 8 of them decided to work in house SEO. 2 of them didn't. They were all around me (these two people) stating their own point of view with things like "you seem to be doing nothing", "where are we going to be number one", "why are we spending our money on you" and those things. After some monthes the site started having some visibility they two, instead of feeling good, were even worst with me just not to admit they were in a mistake. What happened? I have been fired and it was 3 months from start and made the page be number one in various keywords. Let me tell you: I will never do it again.

Coming from an in-house position myself, I totally agree with the 5 steps. I truely believe that there is alot of preparation to be made prior to hiring any in-house SEO. And what eletitor said is true, the existing teams need to agree upon the SEO direction in the company, otherwise there will only be rounds after rounds of debate and disagreement between the in-house SEOs and the other teams.
Another important point missing there is the red tapes in the company. It plays a huge role as it pretty limits what the SEO can do and how efficient the person can execute the changes. I've written a post about the how bureaucratic red tapes hinder SEO progress, check my profile.

We recognize best practices are extremely important, however; there is no cookie-cutter bullet list.
In the search community we've got several categories of SEO/SEM best practices, which vary depending on the site and business model.
For instance, we saw a significant difference with eCommerce in particular; when we started a client project Q1 '07 their best practices became more of a ‘Needs Assessment’ document tailored to their infrastructure. Best Practices had to be designed specifically for them due to their complexity and unique issues.
Been involved with natural search for 13 years now, the last 5 years become friends with search VP's and managers at AOL, Intuit, WeatherChannel, Microsoft, Adidas, P&G, Schwab, Overstock, Fox Media, Sony Pictures Digital and plenty of others, so I understand some of the limitations you must be confronting on a day-to-day basis (in regards to best practices and integrating search).
My intention as an author providing content for Chris is to help you; hence the email link being the best way to accomplish that specific objective.
The best method for developing a set of search Best Practice documents is for us to chat for 15-20 minutes; email allows us to make that connection. Several readers have contacted me today and we’ve exchanged “great initial conversation.”
