Using twitter as a link dump for backlinks really isnt a very disruptive use of the system. You dont need any followers, so you dont have to worry about mass-following a whole bunch of people and annoying them by inflating their follower-count or clogging their email with notifications. I really dont see any problem with doing this because it doesnt annoy anyone.
But alot of you are trying to leverage Twitter to get traffic to your sites. You mass follow a whole bunch of people in hopes that they will follow you back and then will see and click on your spam links. Youve created a Twitter name like: weightloss or wuyitea or herbalremedy, or some other product/keyword. Then youre scraping some tweets from rss or from related websites, or usually news feeds. Youre tweeting out maybe 4 messages a day, all at the same time, and every message has a link back to your site, or your squidoo lens.

Lets not forget the unfollow games!I played with one for a little while, just to see what they would do. It starts off with them following me. Then I check em out and see that they have at least some useful links and seem to be a real person, so I follow back.About a day later, they have unfollowed me. Since they werent all that useful anyways, I unfollow them. And then - heres the kicker - about a day later, they followed me again.I went back and forth with him a couple times, then one time I didnt follow back. They are still following me, and its been about 2 weeks =P
So thats why youve been following and unfollowing me! Im a person damnit! Not a spam bot! :)
Good read. The right ways to do it on Twitter.
Great article. I have also had a few of the "follow and unfollow" spammers. I think Twitter is wonderful beause we can always unfollow... now we just need some type of block feature? (if there isnt one).
Just because youre paranoid doesnt mean theyre not following you...Twitter smo and linkbait spam is the worst kind of chum and is a sure sign that twitters now mainstream. If only these waters were truly shark-infested. Till twitter figures something out were going to have to get used to canned spam messing up our conversation flow...Grr...
