One of the first jobs I have to do as a consultant going into an SEO engagement is to debunk the myth that SEO is "free". SEO has never been, nor will it ever be, free traffic. It takes work, and that comes at a cost.

Great article - more and more of my clients are coming round to the opinion that it takes hard work and commitment to get results. But by doing it they can relatively easily differentiate themselves from their competitors that simply sit back and wait for it to happen.

Agreed on all points above.  My clients want results ("Quick Wins"!!) but invariably, there's nothing like hard steady work.

Clients believe it's free because they simply don't understand it.  They think it takes a couple clicks and it's done!  Boy are they wrong!

Did you guys read the whole article? Stephan is advocating a pay-per-click organic SEO model.

Is that something you all truly believe in?

Cuz I sure don't.

IMO, it's taking a step backwards to the way SEO was done in the 90's. Stop paying your SEO and you lose all your traffic.

The beauty of SEO is that it's a long-term solution. Get your fundamentals done right and continue to have link worthy content.

I hate the thought of clients paying for organic rankings by the click and being stuck doing that for the rest of their lives. Blech...
