If you’ve been on twitter today, you would have seen a lot of people voicing their disgust at Jason Calacanis’ words during todays keynote. In particular, Rand Fishkin twittered that he left in disgust. And it was bugging me that I couldn’t find out more details. Well, Bruce Clay has come through with a post:
"SEO is a wasted industry. You’re wasting your time fighting off ranking problems instead of creating great content. You’re just spinning your wheels hoping the Google gods won’t kick you out. It’s a bad way to live your life. Using a human service is a better way to go about it."

Sorry - I shouldn’t have even given him the satisfaction of mentioning it, but was disgusted by that kind of behavior from an invited speaker. As an audience, you give speakers a great deal of respect and as a speaker, it is your responsibility to reciprocate.

Rand, no need for apologies... as I say, some of us were following along on Twitter, and you were far from being the only person who voiced their unhappiness; so it was going to be said regardless :P

Reinforcing popular prejudice works again and again with the feeble minded. What Hillary Clinton did with "obliterating Iran" Calacanis capitalizes over and over. Don’t link to him!

Guys, do we really still care what Jason says? We’re like the bullied younger brother that still looks up to the older one because he smokes and listens to Green Day.We could all easily tell him that most web 2.0 start-ups are bound to fail and suck up a lot of honest people’s pension funds in the process, but he wouldn’t give a shit, so why should we?

I saw this keynote and I didn’t get so offended by it. Yeah there was some anti-SEO bias and ignorance (which I have heard plenty before, and I am learning to take in stride) - but overall, I found his talk interesting and within the context of what he was invited to do: speak on an pannel featuring some new social / human enhanced search technologies.

What kind of lesson are we learning from Jason. If he wasn’t the founder of Mahalo and the former VP of AOL’s Netscape division, he would not be allowed to speak. So the moral of the story is once you’ve become the VP of a major corporation’s division you can take the stage and say whatever you want, no matter how nonsensical and offensive it is?People here bitch and moan when a person submits a story that portrays SEOs in a bad light and say things like "This is why the desphinn button was created." But then someone who is ruining the SEO industry’s reputation more than anyone is continiously invited to make keynotes....ok.....

Can we all please just ignore Calacanis? He promotes this way JUST because it plays into "why omgz Mahalo is teh r0x0r". I doubt HE even believes this rubbish (at least as strongly as he makes it sound).Stop giving him keynotes.Stop listening to him.Stop reacting.Although it’s taking ever ounce of strength I have to not blog post about this crap, I’ll admit.

Ofcourse he doesn’t believe anything he says.  I will stop reacting as soon as people stop giving him keynotes.  But when he makes a keynote it travels throught the Internet, so I think people feel like they have no choice but to respond. Otherwise, you’ll be like Dukakis in the ’88 presidential election. He has a legion of idiot fanboys who believe everything he says about SEO, and if no one responds, then it only reinforces his arguments. The day that he is given his last keynote will be day that people can finally ignore what he says.  Until then you have a person who is idiotically given a bullypulpit, and can do real damage to an industry’s reputation and cause it to lose money.  I blame the people who plan the conventions more than anyone.

Jason Calcanis loves baiting SEO’s - it’s attention seeking and traffic building through controversy. It’s been his MO for years now - why does anyone think he will stop now?If people waste time with Jason, he will waste it.Jason used to be somebody on the internet - then he sold out. The only reason he is still regarded as somebody on the internet is that people desperately imagine he is somebody doing something - when he’s doing nothing of consequence, but does a great job maintaining his profile through controversy. This entire thread shows just how successful Jason is, and how dumb the SEO community is for continuing to be his plaything.Stop talking about Jason Calcanis and he will just fade away.2c.

Ha, it’s def. moronic to invite him to conferences. It makes the industry look frivilous. Let’s see a doctor’s convention where the keynote speaker talks about how stupid doctors are...and they are invited to speak over and over and over again. In a "normal" profession these type of keynotes would never be invited. I’m looking forward to reading your post about it if you make one, XMCP. This would be great: the next time Jason is invited to speak at a conference, everyone should stand mute and have NO reaction at all. Dead silence when he is introduced. Dead silence when he ends his speech. That would be funny.@ibrian, you say Calacanis "used to be somebody," but one could argue that he’s more of a somebody now than he was ever before.  Look at Mahalo’s profile at crunchbase: http://www.crunchbase.com/company/mahalo It’s gotten 16 million in funding if that’s still accurate.  I woudn’t call Calacanis a nobody.

I don’t know why this suprises anyone.  I have been adamately opposed to even mentioning this jerks name since the infamous SES Chicago.  I was in the audience that day in Chicago so I think I have a good idea how Rand felt.  It is ridiculous to have to put up with a pompous jerk who is purposely insulting in order to cause controvery to further his own brand.  I also have boycotted even mentioning the Spam Engine Mahalo.  It’s a joke.  And some people follow what this guy has to say like it means something and thus his words are incredibly damaging to our industry.  So it really angers me that people in the search community (sorry Danny but cmon man) continue to put this guy on display.  I think people should just not attend any event where he is speaking.  It won’t take long before he isn’t speaking anymore.  I personally will not attend any event that he is speaking at.

"I personally will not attend any event that he is speaking at"Seconded. Even one step further, I wouldn’t even allow any employees to attend an event where this guy was speaking. Any event that would feature this guy as a speaker has no credibility in my book.

meh. I’ve met plenty of "Content is King" zealots before on the forums. I tend to ignore anyone who thinks that they can achieve rankings based on one single element. Jason is no different from a forum troll, best to just ignore him.Him being a speaker would not stop me from attending a conference though. Missing out on a great, informative conference just because someone’s going to say something you don’t like is silly. SMX is the best conference in the industry, period.

Get over him, he’s just promoting his own search engine - self promotion of course being totally unnacceptable at a conference. Why does he keep getting booked for speaking anyways?!

lol, Jason Calcanis, I thought he said Mahalo was no Google killer, then every sentence in Lisa’s post is subliminal shot at the search engines, ’people do long tail because search fails’...WRONG!I think what he’s trying to do is get pissed off, go to Mahalo try and find faults and give in because Mahalo is the ’end all’ of search because it’s human edited.lol, as a different perspective to it, saying SEO is crap, believe in human edited stuff to SEO’s is like saying God is crap, believe in people to the religious.

My first thought was Jason who? Then my memory returned. And my next immediate reaction was - who cares? From what I read of Bruce’s summary, it was nothing more than 1 person’s opinion. Truth is, he’s just one person yelling loudly at the tide to go away. Life doesn’t work like that. The masses speak louder than 1 lonely insignificant voice. The masses believe that search engines are good for business and that SEOs can help them. Plain and simple. And for him to be yelling like this and he’s got nothing but Mahalo.com - which is not Google, Yahoo, or MSN - is his own misunderstanding of his importance. I’ve voiced this time and time again in SEW - search engines are not search engines anymore. They are media companies. With big Wall Street money coming into search engines, any "engine" that doesn’t have public investor funding is dead. The best hope Mahalo has is to be bought up by Google - which does not loathe SEOs quite as much as Jason does.

"Missing out on a great, informative conference just because someone’s going to say something you don’t like is silly. SMX is the best conference in the industry, period."I like cereal in the morning but if someone takes a crap in my bowl I’m not going to eat around it, the whole bowl goes in the trash. It not "great" after someone craps in it no matter how much sugar or fruit I add.Not going to or supporting this particular conference has nothing to do with someone saying something I don’t like. It has everything to do with the fact that  the people who put these conferences together continue to invite JC to speak despite the fact that in terms of value to the people paying to attend, his contribution is marginal at best...and I think that’s a generous statement.I learned long ago that indeed one bad apple does ruin the bunch, and, people do judge you by the company you keep.

it’s a little ironically funny and sad at the same time that all these comments are grumblings over what a mean man calacanis is. either make an intelligent response as to why what he’s saying is incorrect or be quiet. this insecure whining gets us nowhere.

There’s no reason he should be at an SEO conference given his very public views on the industry. Either skip the portions you know he’ll be at or demand a refund. If people start asking for their money back after he speaks I guarantee he won’t be booked any more. Silence does not win. Complacency does not win either. Do something if you are there to do it. Otherwise... the only thing left is to quetly ignore him...

And cross posting to a third thread:I’ll cross post:http://sphinn.com/story/42262http://sphinn.com/story/42285People tend to think that Jason speaks at all the same conferences on all the same things -- and they fixate on his anti-SEO comments the most. I’ll recap the shows I’ve had him speak at and why.SES Chicago 2006: When I booked Jason, he was heading Netscape, which had grabbed some attention as a Digg rival. Plus, he’s been an interesting character with a long history on the web overall. I think this was the first SEO show he did on his own (I think he was on an AdSense panel at a previous SES, along with others -- and since he ran a major site earning off of AdSense, good sense -- no pun -- for him to be there). At SES Chicago, we did get into his SEO attitude which was a hot button and remains, in my view, a product of his misconception (either intentional or accidental) that SEO = gaming.SMX Social Media 2008: Jason heads Mahalo, a major human-powered search engine doing interesting things. There’s a social aspect to it, and for search marketers wnating to understand how social and search might intersect, he’s a front line guy with important things to say and learn from. As was the same for Jimmy Wales on that panel, as too for Steven Marder from Eurekster. The bulk of that panel was about social and search, not "oh, SEOs suck."Those are shows I’m responsible for, and I totally feel Jason being involved added value. Jason also spoke at SES Local 2008 and SES NY 2008. I’m not up on what he covered in those sessions and how they differed from the roles he was doing as part of the shows I was responsible for. I was no longer programming SES at those times. As for yesterday, when Jason talked again about SEO and issues with it, I then countered to him saying that SEO does not equal gaming -- that SEO equals understanding how search engines gather information and taking steps to make your content visible with it. And for Mahalo, that means engaging in a dialog with the editors, suggesting links and so on. And Jason agreed that SEO as defined like that is totally accceptable and should be encouraged. As did Jimmy Wales.Sadly, Lisa Barone who was live blogging all this got very ill and missed this important discussion. And Rand, who defends the right for others to hear what Jason says would have heard it too if he hadn’t walked out in apparent disgust. By walking out, he also missed hearing other things about how social might change search. You don’t have to like people or agree with them. Matt Cutts is fairly well loved but not all SEOs like him or agree with his views on SEO or how say, links should be policed. So do you ban Matt from speaking? Do you plug your ears and refuse to hear what he says? Either of those lead to less knowledge, not more.

Danny has the patience to tolerate the guy, and benefits from that by learning whatever good info is revealed. Not me... I just skip the session. If it’s a keynote.. like at Affiliate Summit, I skip it and then complete the feedback survey honestly - suggesting that while they may like the cash they probably get from jason for letting him be keynote, it might not be worth it because people won’t go and will think less of the conference. Don’t like that they slated him for a session? Vote with your attention - visit the bathroom instead of listening to Jason. You’ll feel all refreshed and comfortable for the next sessions. Chances are a lot of people will be filled with an urge to visit the bathroom after listening to jason, so you would have avoided those large crowds as well.
