I’m wondering if having a website has become too easy. Perhaps all this great free software like Joomla!, Drupal, Zencart and Wordpress have made owning a website so simple even fools can do it. Complete idiots can create great looking websites, utter buffoons can run on-line shops. Surely this is wrong?

If F + Z = G and G + Z = 0, then F = 2G (free software = two great-looking sites)?

Just joking. I think most non-technical people are totally awed by a site template, a CMS, a blog engine, a forum script or even a guestbook. In comparison, creating content, thinking about usability and site architecture seems mundane.

So they assume that when the site is up and running, the job is 90% done. I often see people being genuinely proud of a new forum that's absolutely empty or a CMS they don't even know how to use. Because stuff like that is very professional and exciting for them, it's mistaken for value created.

Great comment and I agree 100%. Thank goodness I'm not alone on this ;)
