The best way to demonstrate the usefulness or power of Twitter is to show real examples. I started this experiment at approximately 5:20 PM EST on Monday afternoon. Within 1 hour, I had over 80 different replies that answered all of my questions and more. Within 1 hour I had reached out to people from all over the world and they had reached back.

Great to see how this post came together after watching all the tweets from questions Chris Winfield asked going back and forth. Now I have some new people to follow. Thanks Chris!

I would have liked for Chris to mention something in reference to the profile part of Twitter. As in how many followers are needed for immediate feedback. Unless one has hundreds of followers, a Q&A session is not quite going to take off like his did. Twitter is extremely valuable when YOU HAVE MANY FOLLOWERS.

While Chris is certainly one of the most visible people in our industry, anybody who puts the time and effort into Twitter can develop visibility and a large enough network to tap into effectively.  It’s isn’t the size of the network that matters...it’s the quality of it.Excellent story!

Doesn’t matter if you have 10 or 1000’s @ Twitter. What matters is the quality of your time & interaction just like *any other* social site.

M38967 has a point about critical mass. However, you can add the hashtag #poll or #twitterpoll to a post; the hash groups tweets, makes them easy to "follow" (since track is a phone-IM service). Also, PollDaddy has a Twitter poll feature. More good stuff if you’re still trying to figure out how to use Twitter: Paul Bradshaw just wrote a post about how journalists are using (can use) Twitter and I’m working on Twitter genres (another way to analyze how people are using the tool).

Great article! I’m relatively new to Twitter and still learning the ropes, but it’s obviously a viral powerhouse.

Twitter has been the easiest way to get into the life stream ofthe industry. It’s almost voyeuristi at points, yes, but it really is a powerful connection.

I agree with you Barbara KB..^^ having a lot of followers is not the only basis of being successful on Twitter..also the kinds of people you’re following also matters.

by far the best post on twitter that i’ve read. actually showing that it has some sort of usefulness. i was beginning to wonder myself, but i’ve only been on twitter for a few weeks now. as footinmouthdisease says it’s mostly voyeuristic for me at the moment. nice to see the usefulness in action!

This definitely shows the power of Twitter.  It is fun to watch all the new Twitter search engines come out. I wish Terraminds was still around.
