ummm...nice but i was expecting SECRETS. follow people, join conversations with @username, don't be a troll...where are the secrets? this seems like very basic stuff that anyone using the service can figure out. hmmm?

Too many of the posts I read are, "Get rich using Twitter!" posts. I am a realist, which is why it was refreshing to see Neal Patel's take on this today as well.

The real secrets are not the whats but the whys, the evaluation which is completely my own. I have seen too many people blindly read a list of to-dos only to burn themselves out. Honestly, I think that for most Twitter as a marketing tool takes more effort than it is worth. But if you are determined to spend the time and energy then this will keep you on a good track.

PS: I just learned from a well informed source that Sarah is a flamingo. She just hasn't told us yet.

I'm not sure there are really "secrets" to using Twitter. Laura Fitton (aka @pistachio), who spoke at Pubcon last year, would tell you that her business took off by simply using Twitter as it was intended to be used -- to share and have ongoing conversations.

I have a LOT of Twitter followers (not as much as Danny but I'm not as cool as him). My secrets? Share what you believe is pertinent to your audience (or interesting in general), engage them, and help out when you can. You don't see me typing @name often because I like to keep my feed pretty clean and instead opt for private messages (dmsgs) for that purpose.

There are some good points there. Like don't follow everybody right away, you'll look like a spammer. I'm new to twitter but have been doing very well, and my strategy is very similar to yours.

You talk about Guy Kawasaki. I've noticed that the number of my followers always takes a jump after a conversation with him. It's a bit funny, like I must be worth following just because Guy bothers to talk to me.

But Tamar, you're a rock star! You bring your audience with you. And the larger your audience is the quicker you can grow it. I believe it is much different for someone just starting their online reputation promotion.

hjortur,

>> The number of my followers always takes a jump after a conversation with him.

I should have put that on the list. It's just like the self-help books that implore people to hang out with winners, not loosers.

>> Don't follow everybody right away, you'll look like a spammer.

I'm not sure spammer is the best description. More like desperate...ahh, I got it! You will look like a dog that is desperately/hopelessly chasing the tires on moving cars so it can pee.

Tom, stop stalking me! :P

I don't believe this "rock star" stuff at all.  Truthfully, how did I become a "rock star?"  By engaging myself in conversations frequently, that's how.  The point really is that it's a time commitment above all other things.  If you make the time, everything else will come.
