Rhea Drysdale - Search Engine Journal - We’ll let “Jason’s” actions speak for themselves and we ask that you draw your own conclusions based on the evidence before us. If Jason Gambert has such noble aspirations for the search community, why then is he hiding behind a veil of secrecy? And, is this the type of individual that should be responsible for setting SEO standards that everyone must follow before being granted usage of the term?

This is outreageous, and needs to be stopped. A good shopper can stop a con, and this man has no right to hide behind that idea in order to trap that term.

He's not hiding behind that idea. He never intended to get found out until it was all said and done in the first place. One he got caught the bullshit he posted was the fastest thing he could come up with that he thought people would believe.

He was denied trademarking the phrase in the first place because he obviously does not have the right to apply for it as it pertains to search engine optimization, and the TMO atty told him that. So he changed the patent to say he wanted to tm it for System Efficient Optimization.

Based on his bs reply to the community about wanting to do this for our standards, it becomes obvious he's lying through his f'ing teeth. You can't use the tm to apply standards to search engine optimization unless the SEO he is trademarking is for search engine optimization.

If i were Jason, I'd pay no attention to the naysayers.  I'd  keepdoing what I'm doing.  Hopefully he is doing this to create a search related product.  And it the product is even remotely decent then many of the people who are saying this is outrageous will be the same people who will call him a "brilliant marketer" in a few months, write articles about how clever he is, invite him to speak at conferences, invite him to speak on their podcasts, debate him, write more articles about how they think he's no good, which will only build his brand even more, etc.  Hey it happened for to that Jason who called SEO Bullshit why not this Jason? ;)

if he had an amazing search product or service, he wouldn't really need to trademark SEO to make it successful.

@DarkMatter - you're missing the point... it's not the Trademark itself that's the thing... it's the buzz created by TRYING to trademark SEO that's the thing!

FYI - the comment is tounge in cheek ... but ya mighta missed that as well ;)

@ Natasha - The first Jason (Calacanis) had a reputation in the industry and was not considered a threat because only people in the blogosphere were listening to what he had to say. This guy is working to leverage (read - manipulate) the law in his favor to let him control an industry in which he is an unknown. It would be like if I were to trademark a term used in medicine and try to subsequently chair the American Medical Association based on holding a trademark. Sure I was a pre-med student and an EMT at one time, and I understand more than the average person about allopathic, alternative, and naturopathic medicine, but that would not qualify me to hold the authoritative voice in the medical industry.
