Great read and good information for those SEOers more focused on rankings and not retention.
This deserves to go hot imo--very important on the ideas of usability performance.
If you read his work, it is not hard to figure out that Jacob Nielson is a genius. I also took the usability courses offered by Dr. Susan Weinschenk from Human Factors International, all I can say is, retention is the crux of engagement and they have it nailed down to a science.
Without it, SEO is only 50% of what it could be. They are naturally aligned, one drives traffic, the others focus is to retain it. Both are focused on conversion and complement the other well. For more on this topic, here is a post I wrote last week on the subject http://sphinn.com/story.php?id=43214
Enjoy...
Agree that this is a brilliant article and one that every SEO should read. Driving traffic is a means to an end, and not a goal in itself. The goal is always conversion, whether that be a sale, a registration or some other type of transaction.
I have definitely seen SEO conflict with everything else that a website needs. As I'm sure you all know, it's all about balance. Plus, you can drive traffic, but if they just bounce off, there's no value to that traffic.
Bravo!! You have confirmed my hunch that for conversion success, one must marry the elements of usability and optimization together. Thank you!
Usability need to be as important as seo can be in the majority of web projects..I saw personaly that usability is too often forbiden
