From experience, this is dangerous - a big part of link dev is link management ie risk management. If a client thinks all they need is "links" then before you know it, they've bought into a whole range of risky links.
I'm literally in the process of having to chase up links a client has built and have them removed because of the risk factor they've built in.
2c.
@iBrian - thats so true. I have had clients absolutely ram their site with recip links...
It makes sense to train a client on being able to detect linking opportunities in the course of their communications with marketing partners, clients, advertising and PR efforts. Having them run wild with it unmanaged is another matter and can result in unsavory (risky) results.
Thanks for the feedback guys! I do want to point out a couple of things:
My article wasn't suggesting that the client do their own link building. As toprank points out, the idea is to train the client, and more importantly, to get them to buy into link building in general.
When I refer to the client being involved, I mean in terms of leveraging their influence to help secure a link that your research has uncovered or to secure SEO-friendly mentions on sites/portals that they have pre-existing relationships with.
I wasn't suggesting that they engaging in buying links, reciprocating links, etc...
The idea of a client going out and securing a bunch of links without informing the SEO provider and asking for guidance would point to a fundamental lack of true mindshare and partnership, which was sort of the underlying point of the article.
When clients work with me on link building the campaign usually goes much smoother but every once in a while you get the person that knows just enough to be dangerous and throws months of hardwork out the window.
Great article Hugo..I cretainly agree with you on this..client's should find some time to explain and much better to work with their agents on their site's SEO that way they can clearly tell their agents what they want for their site.
