O.K. I am going to pick on The Times because it is funny. Today they published an article entitled Searching to get to the top of Google.

Most of the article is O.K. and it is nice to see SEO getting mentioned in a major newspaper, however some of their facts are a little off.

Hey now. There are certainly two healthy sides to this debate but it's not forget that a number of patent applications from Google discuss this very possibility. A key sentence from the Hilltop algorithm says;
"The problem is, how can we distinguish an expert from other types of pages? In other words what makes a page an expert? We felt than an expert page needs to be objective and diverse: that is, its recommendations should be unbiased and point to numerous non-affiliated pages on the subject."

I should also say that The Times didn't get that insight from us although I feel that I would have agreed its a valid angle but rather more complex than they suggest.

I'd go with Andrew on that one - I tend to think it's not a bad long-term tactic (linking out to get links in, who'd a thunk it?).

I think 'getting a link from the BBC will boost your google ranking' would be a better message.

It is true. Google looks at who you link to. I linked one site to authority sites and got a PR5 with few backlinks. A similar website with few links to authority sites was stuck at PR2. Not only do inbound links help you, but outbound also.

And it makes sense. It is like having a billionairee at your party helps you, but you being at that billionaires party also helps you. By your friends you shall be known.

Well I guess every man or women to his or her own.   Somethings are just better left to debate :)
