Most of the article is O.K. and it is nice to see SEO getting mentioned in a major newspaper, however some of their facts are a little off.

" Part crystal-ball watching" I dont think so
Hey now. There are certainly two healthy sides to this debate but its not forget that a number of patent applications from Google discuss this very possibility. A key sentence from the Hilltop algorithm says;"The problem is, how can we distinguish an expert from other types of pages? In other words what makes a page an expert? We felt than an expert page needs to be objective and diverse: that is, its recommendations should be unbiased and point to numerous non-affiliated pages on the subject."ftp://ftp.cs.toronto.edu/pub/reports/csri/405/hilltop.htmlI should also say that The Times didnt get that insight from us although I feel that I would have agreed its a valid angle but rather more complex than they suggest.
Id go with Andrew on that one - I tend to think its not a bad long-term tactic (linking out to get links in, whod a thunk it?).
I think getting a link from the BBC will boost your google ranking would be a better message.
It is true. Google looks at who you link to. I linked one site to authority sites and got a PR5 with few backlinks. A similar website with few links to authority sites was stuck at PR2. Not only do inbound links help you, but outbound also. And it makes sense. It is like having a billionairee at your party helps you, but you being at that billionaires party also helps you. By your friends you shall be known.
Well I guess every man or women to his or her own. Somethings are just better left to debate :)
