From the Get Elastic Ecommerce Blog, here are some social media profile avatars that many of you will remember... hell, most are probably owned by people on Sphinn.

They were chosen from Twitter, StumbleUpon and MyBlogLog, mostly. The idea was about personal branding through the avatar, and these examples fit with the analysis of the companion post "Is it Time To Break Up With Your Avatar" - there are different strategies you can use to stand out.  Putting "standouts" together makes it harder to stand out.  Of course there are amazing avatars that got missed and it’s subjective, it’s like picking "the best blog posts of the year" or the "50 most beautiful people" :)  We’d love if you have your own favorites for what makes a great avatar and why and drop them in the comments.

I have to say that I was very surprised to see mine there (it certainly isn;t like that on purpose - it’s just that the walls of our office are that colour!), and almost feel like I shouldn’t Sphinn in order to avoid looking vain!

I love the solid color background strategy - Matt McGee does it well. But my favorite avatar of all time for personal branding and avatar recognizability is Tadeusz Szewczyk of onreact.com - it’s funny, has good color, is consistent across sites and carries over to his blog. Love it.

"can another title be "almost a shoe in to get every one of these people to sphinn this post"No doubt.  On their way to 99 sphinns, lol.  Glad to see the green monster on there.

ciaran, your so vain, you probably think this story is a bout you (sing it with me) YOUR SO VAIN! Just kidding. I like this thread a lot, because it uses a positive (flattery) to market. I am so sick of all the XYZ sucks, why Facecbook is dead etc etc stories I keep reading. Viva la suckupbait!
