Thats because, for most Adwords advertisers, the title of this post is very accurate. Most advertisers are doing split testing all wrong.

I get a chuckle out of seeing a full blown article describing something that the author alluded to a long time ago. It pays to pay attention to smart people, so you can share the benefits. As I recall, Dan said this over a year ago (without all the explanations). It made great sense then, and looks pretty obvious now. Notice he says he himself was doing straight A/B testing as late as 2006... sounds about right.IMHO the stomping is annoying, though.
John, expect more articles on these ideas about PPC, SEM, and ROI. Yes, Ive been talking about this stuff for a long time but I often find its necessary to write a lengthy article and produce videos to help others understand. Not sure what youre annoyed by, but as my kids say... whatever.
amazing post, thank you!
Dan, Thanks for the great article...I would have missed this tip if you wouldnt have reposted it...
Ive only been doing PPC for about 5 months now and thought I was doing a pretty good job of testing PPC ads....until I saw this post! Gave me a completely new look on testing my adwords ads, and really is something I never even thought of doing. The thought that you are reducing your profits by running the test ad half as much of the time that you are running your control did come across my mind as well, but the idea of creating multiple controls is brilliant. Thanks Dan!
Thanks guys. From the comments on the post, I got some great info on an easier way to pick winners in the ad tests from Andy Edmonds and discovered that Adwords Editor doesnt support creating multiple copies - you have to log into the web interface to do it.Hope you guys are watching my video too.
Great video, Dan!
