Mike Blumenthal published a fascinating interview/case study into how one personal injury lawyer in LA got himself banned while the competition continues to spam. As usual, Google is unresponsive on the whole (Maps guide Jen is the tiny exception). A must read!

Agreed -- this is a must read and illustrates how it’s still like the Wild West or SEO 1999 when it comes to local search. When’s Google going to employ the spam fighting there that goes into web search? And it’s not alone among the majors in having this problem.

My number 1 takeaway is that you can’t count on google to bring down the spam-hammer in a fair and equitable way.In other words, try it and take your chances with full knowledge that your competition may not suffer the same fate for their spamming ways.

Much of the LA Dog Bite Lawyer Mapspam has now been removed. I detailed some of the competitor’s handy work yesterday and much is now goneMike Blumenthal

Since when is spam penalties ever dealt fairly in any aspect of Google results?  How many times have we seen the big guys either:1.  Not get penalized when all the little guys did, or2.  Get penalized but get NOTIFIED of the penalty, or3.  Get penalized, get notified, and then get restored in the blink of an eye much quicker than the little guys could have ever gotten restored.Face it.  Google doesn’t always play fair, no matter what they may "say".

Have to agree with Donna, big sites get a lot of benefits even though they break the same guidelines, including partnerships: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-04-29-n56.html
