Yo - interesting post. But I thought the comment about how "I’m so obsessed with it I had my own scripts written to do it. Yes, I know, it’s sad." was indeed very sad. That was just poorly disguised self promotion. Hey, if you want to self promote, cool, just don't try to be sneaky about it. Keep it real, and hate the player, not the game!
I'm sure different people approach link building strategies in different ways, but I know the link requests I've received usually put me off purely by failing to reference my website or me at all. I get link requests that are simply cut and paste jobs that don't even acknowledge why my site was targeted or how my site will benefit (other than the 'we'll link back to you' promise).
This lack of personalisation or detail makes me very suspicious on whether I will genuinely will receive a link back and smacks of spam. I'm made to feel like one in a pack of thousands where it doesn't matter to the originator whether it's me who links back or the next guy. So it gets ignored.
On the other hand, if someone links to me and/or tries to build a relationship with me by using my name or referencing my website, I am almost certainly going to link back.
Not commenting on how you approach link building as I don't know. Just relaying my experiences.
HateThePlayer - Thanks for "keepin' me real", but if my goal was self promotion, I'da deep linked that beeyatch to specially created page on my own site that woulda been more blatant. Sort like what you just did for that blog you started all of 2 days ago. Hey, no offense, I'm just callin it like I see it. Y'know, keepin it real, jus' like you is.
That and of course anyone with even a halfclue knows by now that I have my own link analysis tools. I mean this approach I've used now for, um, 14 (freeking) years was such a secret, I needed a post here at SEL to help me, right?
If it will make you sleep better, or better yet, give you something else to blog about on day three of your illustrious blog, I'll log in and edit the story so you wont havta hatethisplaya. But I think you did long before you launched.
HateThePlayer - rather than wait I went ahead and removed the mention of "my scripts" from the article. I'm sure there was other stuff that bugged you, so if you'd prefer, send me a private email and I can do this faster. Oh, and what's a "hommie"?
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hommie
says that your word Hommie is...
Is that right?
Busted on the misspelling! I don't know if I'm a wannabe, but certainly granted that I'm not a hip hopper. I'm not an OG blogger either, don't hate on that boyee. Ha ha ha.
Nothing disguised, let alone poorly, about deep linking a blog post. Honest self promotion is good. I didn't rip you for blantant self promotion, just the poorly disguised type.
You took post #99 to the next level by correcting hip-hop words. You are elite. http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/
Can we have a mod get rid of this guy's junk?
@ Eric - I'm curious to know what the ROI is on SEO for a biotech company. Unless we're talking viagra (which it didn't sound like based on your allusion to gov and edu links) I don't see how a company in the business of making/mass-marketing drugs converts online. Care to share?
@Gab - the biotech company makes oncology testing equipment, so it's a really vertical market. I think part of the challenge has been that the overall biotech niche is filled with spammers and black hat stuff, so the signal:noise ratio is high. As for ROI, I was brought in by a consultant, so I'm not privvy to those metrics, but I would not be surprised if they have some data showing a top five ranking is worth X amount, based on their other product line web sites. The company has 20 or so sites. The one I'm working on is one of the newer sites.
I must admit, Eric, that I have trained my spam filter so that by now most link requests go automatically to spam. I don't have the time to read through so many empty messages. Perhaps I've set the setting too high but that's what works for me.
On the other hand, I do read messages where it appears that we're talking about some kind of almost-meme where both websites can benefit from the relationship. That does justify a little thinking time.
