In spite of the fact that I have always been an early adopter of new technology — or communications-based tools, social media turns me off. When I think about why, at least 10 reasons come to mind.

(I really enjoy the linkbait title, btw.) ;)

Some interesting thoughts - anyway, here in germany the social media thing is still not quite as big as it is in the states. social news - not really important. social bookmarking - okay, has some users. social networking - yeah, widely spread but not for business reasons. video sharing - all young people watch videos on youtube, that’s it. photo sharing - niche.

Number 11) The wife is getting jealous of all the attention you pay to social media websites. “Can you PLEASE put that damn iPhone away for just 5 minutes?!”

Thats true.  The more vertical social networks we get....the harder is it to keep up.I think the article, though, fails to make a distinction between social news vs. social networking sites.  And even between Linked In vs. Facebook there is enough difference to justify a different rationalization for getting on and a different strategy.I think doing away with social media makes as much sense as unplugging your cell phone.....but the points are VERY well taken.  Focus is key.

John Mariotti had overlooked benefits of internet in marketing.  It’s quite inexpensive and has a far reach.  Social media is one and the latest.  How many times a cold call or an email would go to spam, until finally one would bring an answer?  Sending out email, printing brochures and taking part in conferenses can well be complimentary.  Social media is a virtual network, which you can’t fully rely on, but is very sueful while building your brand and indentity on the web.
