I don’t think the post is spam. You might not like the article but why is it spam?

"Sphinn will tell you to use their contact page to report these matters. But the last time I used it, I received no response. Besides, blogging it alerts you to these issues before they are removed to save face. If you are aware that not all front page news in Sphinn is reputable and / or trustworthy, than you are equipped with another opportunity to research things further before accepting everything you read in naivety."The reports are not ignored and should be done. If we don’t respond, that doesn’t mean nothing is done. Often we take action on what gets sent without needing to do follow up. As a regular participant in Sphinn, I’d really encourage a report having been done in addition to blogging. At the very least, it might have alerted us more rapidly to something before it hit the home page. It would also have been nice if either the spam report button or the desphinn option had been used. The mods aren’t perfect. Stuff will get past us. This looks like it has some suspicious voting, so I’ll pull it. But we do offer three different ways for the community to help -- and none of those were used in this case.

Patrick its more about the fact that most of the sphinns seem to be by the same person.I wouldn’t say the article was spam, just low quality and not worthy of a sphinn :)

i didn’t think it would get sphunn..thanks steaprok.matt, yup..that was primarily the point, as well as the fact that it was predominantly Sphunn by sock puppets which is what made it hit homepage to begin with..by the time i saw it, it was already there.

On a related note:What about all the stupid ’OMG social media dad XXXX just had baby!’Do those belong on the first page? I think not...

boorishamerican, of course they do! it brings the ’social’ to a more tangible level..Sphinn allows SM related content and the dad posts are just that.they give people a better understanding of who they are online as well as offline..in real life scenarios. how to juggle family, work and play is also a part of a marketers life. this encourages stronger bonding and is a form of trust building. very relevant indeed.

the article was not that bad. It touched on some points that are not always discussed and I thought it was better than a lot of other regurgitated posts that tell you to put keywords in your title and that reach the front page from time to time.Account spamming is a completely different issue.

The Pligg platform that we operate on is meant to send out automated emails when certain tasks are carried out by moderators, which sometimes do not reach peoples inboxes. We also tend not to reply to spam reports unless asked a question, as the consensus was that people are happy for us to simply take action.Once again, please report spam via the proper means - don’t just blog about it or leave a comment as there’s no guarantee we’ll see it.

Well, at least we are not getting hit with V*%GRA ads or "See Alice". My filter is pretty smart, but I still get email ads for "Hone Lone" and "More Gag Broke Are"BTW, on MTURK you can get a penny if you DIGG or stumble peoples websites. Talk about desperate. :)

the post, in my opinion, would never have seen the sidebar, much less the frontpage without the use of the sock puppets.when i say ’spam’ post made frontpage, i am saying that spammers made the frontpage. i did not say that the post in and of itself is spam. that’s the beauty behind creating titles..to draw readers for heaven sakes..it hit the frontpage due to spamming techniques. i will desphinn and report as suggested..even without response. i can do my part. no problem. it was already hot by the time i saw it this morning.but i am a blogger and i write about things that i see. my site is called ’learning seo basics’ not ’learning naivety’..this is relevant to what happens in online communities and sphinn is likley to be experienced by many..when it is useful i blog the positive aspects as well. i did not submit this post or even ask steaprok to do so..i learned that it had been submitted after the fact.

@spostareduro NP, I submited becuase I agree with many of your points. The whole Sphinn eco system is screwed up, from spam hitting front page, to duplicate articles showing right ontop of 1 another for almost a full day, to things being pulled with no notice, etc, etc. Everyone is concentrating on the one point of spam hitting "whats hot", but I think your post discussed various important points besides the spam. I used to use Sphinn everyday, but becuase of this and the mob mentality of Sphinning things just becuase they recognize the avatar next to it, turned me off. I still use it, and enjoy many of the great submissions, but I lost the passion I once had for it. It’s not an attack on Sphinn, the mods, or the users. Just an observation that the aggregate of its parts is out of whack. It reminds me of an old saying " dont shit where you eat!"

I’m so curious what that "spam" story was...

As much as Admins help... the community is responsible for weeding out spam. You flag em and we get em. Desphinn is also a way to keep posts down. Don’t want to do all that... ping me anytime with a link and i will check it out. Also how is that spam in any way, shape, or form. After reviewing it now i would choose to leave it and let the users decide if it should make front page.

Also it depends on level. I see a few articles on the front page now that i would remove if it was my call but it is not... you guys vote em and you guys desphinn em.. get involved.Lastly.. if i could show you all the spam i killed today alone.. plus the screen with me and all the other mods together... we get more than you can imagine.

@spostareduro "when i say ’spam’ post made frontpage, i am saying that spammers made the frontpage. i did not say that the post in and of itself is spam. that’s the beauty behind creating titles..to draw readers for heaven sakes.."Seriously? Post Spammed to Front PageSpammers Get Post to Front PageHow Spammers Get a Sphinn Front PageAll those say it is about the process...Spam Post Makes Front Page says only one thing and one thing only... Sorry.

Drupal, haha..here, i’ll give you one quote from it that stands out in my mind the most, "a digg frontpage is not so hard to reach" (uh..hello?! was he talking about the digg that i know?) here’s his post too btw..i grabbed it from my browser - sandossu[dot]com/2008/05/20/search-engines-vs-social-media/BrentCsutoras, after this reply to you, i have more important things to do..you obviously disagree with my choice of titles. that’s your right. therefore, using the desphinn option was most appropriate for your needs and or tastes..as far as my title being crefted in an ambiguos manner, this does validate your reasoning behind your desphinn. your explanation for desphinning stated, " the article in questions was not spam at all." once again, i never claimed the content of the post to be spam. i claimed a ’spam post’ as hitting frontpage. the post in reference was the sphunn post..not the actual dude’s site post..the sphunn post included spam, because it was sock puppeted to manipulate the voting..in essence...spam. (ambiguation is no crime. you only chose to see one defintion. not my fault) it happened. i blogged it. it was sphunn. i’m done with it.

thanks all who sphunn it. thanks all who didnt. i rightly dont care one way or the other. making frontpgae of sphinn has slowly become something that is of very little interest to me. i’d rather play rock paper scissors in facebook to help charities than sit around arguing with unreasonable children all day long.

I think the mods do a great job here, there’s always room for more input from the community though. Like here Kim, I doubt they would have the time to do the investigation you have done into those sock puppet accounts. Everytime I’ve submitted an issue though it’s been dealt with, often with a reply. That’s pretty good for a site where none of the mods are ’full time’.  Considering the success of Sphinn, I imagine they get absolutely hammered with spam. I don’t think Pligg has too many tools to deal with it either judging by the spam-fest I see on other Pligg-based sites.

There is loads of great stuff on here. Maybe too much to do with Twitter, but that just reflects what is hot at the moment. I don’t get to see much spam on here, and even if some does come through, it won’t climb up that high.

"As much as Admins help... the community is responsible for weeding out spam. "Completely disagree - editorial responsibility is the onus of the publisher.I think Danny has perhaps worried too much in having industry specialists as moderators, when a larger team of core Sphinn users could probably be more effective. Communities are best managed by those with a larger interest in the communities, IMO.Still yukked out by some medical photos submitted to Sphinn last night. Unfortunate problem for community members is sometimes checking that something is definitely spam before flagging it, and there’s easily room for some very disturbing content to be flooded into Sphinn. The spam highlighted in this thread was reasonably clever, though, and it was on-topic. That’s why it was harder to report as spam - we can’t report every lame submission, only obvious spam. 2c.

This article might have been a helpful learning exercise.  Unfortunately, the underlying article it referred to has now been taken down.  So I couldn’t get any educational insight.  Maybe someone will better explain what it was all about??

i just reviewed the comment i made that was down voted so many times. i felt abused and the words didnt come out right. when i said, "thanks all who sphunn it. thanks all who didnt. i rightly dont care one way or the other."..i didnt mean that i dont care about the readers, or you who have sphunn my posts. i meant that i didnt care so much about hitting the frontpage as i care about more important things in life nowadays. thats all. hitting the frontpage used to be more important to me, but then i realized that it was easier to remove my sphinn button plugin, and focus on what is important."unreasonable childern" referred to the anger i was hearing. i mean, cmon..brent commented THREE times in a row cause he was so hyped up. and it was a mod attack in the desphinn area because of what i blogged.i am sorry if what i said offended anyone, it wasnt intentional. i will make sure to take a breath before i respond to commentary here next time. i really am not a hateful person. those that have taken the time to get to know me behind the scenes, know better than that. thanks to everyone. you are appreciated.
