i hate the term seo rockstar, but this is a convincing article describing the benefits of social media. :-)

For evaluating keyword clusters, I would add taking a baseline of whatever keywords allready drive organic traffic to the site for insight.

Especially since this article has nothing to do at all with being an SEO Rockstar and it has only one section on basic social media.

No offense to Maki but he doesnt obviously count his time as a cost. Social media is not low cost by any stretch of the imagination.

BrentCsutoras, it all depends on how well the time is spent. if you begged borrowed and stole for 5 grand yet it returned 20, it was not costly..it was profitable.

you know what i just realized? i hate to be a dumb*ss about this..cause afterall, i AM the one that submitted this post..but is it just me, or are there also questionable sphinners on THIS post? i'd hate to think someone is gaming it! that would be a b*tch. (it looks as though there may be 4 or 5 i have never seen)

I am not debating how time is spent. I am debating that anything social requires time. A lot of time. Time is valuable. If you try to hire a social media consultant it is expensive because it is a constant time sink with social.

Maki spends all day every single day in social media. So if you want to succeed like Maki does you have to spend all day everyday.

:)

Brent - Yes, it only has a basic section on social media, basic on SEO too, but it is what they wanted.  As for cost, I have to agree with Kim; it all depends on the ultimate goal.

Kim - WHAT??? - now you're stressing me out - don't tell me that...who?  I know of one you won't know (Martyn) but he's been a member for a while - but -  rarely votes on my stuff (ratfink).

Brent, thank you for bringing this up.

I'm not saying it doesn't take time; it does - a ton!

What I'm saying is that it is low cost *if* a small business owner decides to get involved in social media on his/her own - without bringing in a consultant.

In fact, the reference to Maki points out the large amount of time required (it took 20 hours for him to write one piece).  The question then, to the business owner is: Is it worth it?

Some will say yes, others no.

Personally I think it is :)

@BrentCsutoras: "So if you want to succeed like Maki does you have to spend all day everyday." Or hire someone for a boatload of money (well deserved IMO) that can successfuly get the work done for you.

@Lid: "it is low cost *if* a small business owner decides to get involved in social media on his/her own" I'd say it depends on the small business and what level of success they were currently at. I know from experience what it takes and in many cases I feel hiring a pro would be more cost effective than going it alone.

The time it takes for a small company to effectively engage in social media is very time consuming.

Time = Money..

@planetc1

If you want to succeed overall then yes. If you want to throw crap on a wall and then when something finally sticks, call it success.. then well anyone can win.

Michael - thanks.  True, it is very dependent on the business, but my logic is that whether or not they are participating in social media, someone out there is talking about them, and they should at a minimum be able to find that info and react accordingly...you are one of very few that uses social media effectively - you should be teaching others my friend ;) And yep, for some it will be smarter to pay.

Brent - okay - I've got to give you brownie points for that last sentence - gave me a smile and got rid of that horror headache I've had all day ;)

Also, sometimes it doesn't even take much.  Take Twitter for instance.  Yesterday and today they've been mucking up constantly; they really should have let us know what was happeing.  Not minute by minute, nor in detail, but just every so often..

well, I am new here (as an active member at least, although I have been reading sphinn since it launched).

regarding the issue of cost, some folks can't afford to have their seo or social networking done by a consultant; so in that regard any info that can help them 'succeed' must be worthwhile. the more you know about it, the less 'crap on a wall' you have to throw, which reduces your time spent on it...

i couldn't resist commenting here because of the title; I am currently developing a site on SEO for musicians who would like to become rock stars...game game game.

Okay, so here's the deal: I'm not as experienced as others on this site; and am new to the social media game. So, this post is great for me. Very informative. Almost a step by step guide on how to slowly gain some success in social media. I like that she differentiates between "simple" and "easy", as I am slowly beginning to understand this subtle difference as it applies to social media.

Dan - very cool!  Thanks.  See, the thing is Brent and I cater to two entirely different audiences. I figure if I can help people who are starting out in social media and SEO, those who have fewer dollars but perhaps more time, I really must.

April - thank you.  You've hit the nail on the head - that's my entire theory "slowly gain success" - too many people rush in to SM and fail - softly, softly, and slowly, slowly work best. :)

Nice article Lid but title is not even close. Hardly how to be an seo rock star. More like how to be an seo groupie. ;)
