You may not want to consciously spam Google, but do you want to show up #1 for rankings you don't deserve?

I gotta agree to that SEO could be considered spam. As someone who believes that, in the end, quality content will trump search engine optimized content, I just feel that SEO is a manipulative tactic used to create interest for articles that aren't strong enough to stand on their own two feet.
As a Virtual Biographer, I don't worry so much about making search engines happy, I concern myself with making my client's audience happy, and that's accomplished by always delivering quality content.

Who desides you don't deserve it?
Is quality content spam? Good content is used to raise your SERPs.
Optimizing your site with the words people are searching on that are relevant to your site is good SEO. Is this spam too?
Using SEO to make your site more visable to the search engines is not spam any more than using better usability is spamming your visitors is!
Funny that you are marginally link spamming Sphinn and calling SEO spam. Most of my work in SEO is to help sites with quality content acheive better search engine traffic. These sites are relevant and worthwhile to users who find them. I simply make sure that the content is presented in a way that appeals to search engines and users. Sure, quality content is of utmost importance but if a search engine can't find or read it when they get to the page it is not going to rank well. As an SEO I use my expertise to help search engine find and read that great content. This is not spam.
Funny that you didn't read the article...
@garypool this is really about whether SEO clients want to target realistic keywords. And about how SEO helps guide your website's future development, based on the keywords you want to rank for. SEO data and analytics gives us an objective way to understand niches semantically and quantitatively.
@mpilatow I agree that SEO is not spam, and I think you'll find that's what the article says. How am I/are we link spamming sphinn? I have mentioned it on twitter, and so have others- that's the nature of viral media, social media, word of mouth... if there's a line to step over, where is it, and what? Seriously, I'd like to know. Thanks!
bbcarter, not sure if you are responding to me but I did read the article and I agree. I was responding to Ghostblogger's assertion that SEO is spam because it us used to make sure undeserving sites rank well due to SEO. I simply wanted to point out that much of the SEO work most SEOs are doing is to help high quality sites rank well by helping them make sure their content is easily crawlable and able to be read by search engines.
not directed at you bbcarter. Sorry for the confusion. I was pointing out the two link drops by ghostblogger
You can watch Matt's presentation at Web2 on his blog, where he says, in as many words, "SEO is not spam."
I want to apologize for making such an umbrella statement that might have sounded like I meant that all SEO is spam. I realize that in this age of the Internet SEO has great value, but also believe - and this is just my honest opinion - that the SEO skillset will become a lost art once the smarter semantic web kicks in and starts favoring content over keywords.
And mpilatow... I wasn't link spamming Sphinn by leaving my url in my comment. For all I know, Sphinn has a no follow policy in their comments. I was simply inserting an honest plug to those who might be interested in learning more about what I do. I understand how you could have misinterpreted that, but if I really wanted to spam Sphinn I would have just left my url and bailed without leaving my written opinon on the article. Now THAT'S spam.
