This is really a useful synopsis of convential thinking regarding Do/NoFollow.

I’m a DoFollower using the basic plugin.  This means checking each post that Akismet doesn’t automatically mark as spam to see whether I think it falls ’on the right side of the line’. If there is useful comment for subsequent readers, even if minimal, and the URL isn’t to an undesirable website, then I’ll probably approve the comment. This works for me.

I still don’t think that encouraging people to comment by giving them a free backlink is the right thing to do...

It it’s a real comment, I want them to have a real backlink.  Andy’s comment on this post is a case in point.  It’s real content, given freely.  That kind of a comment deserves a dofollow.

Nice piece. I tend to fall between two extremes in the comment following. I follow the initial post link (i.e. the commenter’s name) but nofollow in the comment text. That’s something I think I should change though - the more I think about it the more I don’t see any justification for nofollow. It doesn’t stop spam, and all it does is reduce the value that commenters deserve for contributing to your site.
