Wow.. It seems like it is getting harder and harder to work in the modern world with a handshake and your word.. This is a great example of where adding very specific performance clauses to a contract would save a lot of problems..

Start and Stop dates, lead performance, etc., should all be taken in to consideration and laid out in very clear language..

Great post - it's actually pretty shocking that anyone could claim that you weren't getting incentivized traffic. I'd be interested to see how this all turns out...
