Whenever I see phrases like “Usability is first, SEO is second”, I don’t agree with the competition this sets up.

Both disciplines are vital to the air your web site breathes. They are equal sides of the same lung.

Great piece Kim - I find that there are cases where good usability is good SEO - but sometimes great usability has NO SEO- so there has to be a balance. If you talk to an SEO, a Usability Person and your Web Designer/Developer before you start with a site design - you’re setting yourself up for success from the very beginning - this is huge to small businesses who don’t have the resources to start from scratch if it doesn’t work the first time.

Usability is more important than SEO like having sex is more important than breathing air but you don’t want to miss out on either.
