My favorite SEM sales pitch joke is when I hear some agency's entire proposed "KPI" is organic prominence measured by outdated scrape & report programs. Solid SEM measures organic prominence success by organic traffic sales conversion.

kpi is bs, imho. Seek the long (hit-)tail and ye shall find.

If you interact with others - and unless you only run your own accounts who doesn't? - KPIs are critical to knowing what your goals are and ensuring that clients know how well you're achieving them.
