As certain industries emerge into the Corporate Limelight (such as Paid Search and Organic Search) and attract multitudes of investors, private and public companies and localized talent, it’s important to note that not all search candidates are created equal. Let’s face it, you can tell a very good search professional/expert by (1) google search on their name (2) resume (3) knowledge of what is happening in the search world today vs. yesterday (4) "real world" common sense experience of "trial & error" (5) Overall Web Marketing experience.

I like this post, and the topic, but what data do you have to support any of your "trends" and "many are..." statements? "a trend is emerging where companies are hiring people with little to no experience at all" To call this a trend, there must be some kind of data to support the claim. There is a lot that can be said on the topic, but you should share the source of your facts so we can discuss them in context. I agree that companies are hiring experienced people, but there are different reasons for this: 1) They prefer moldable/trainable staff 2) There are extremely few experienced SEOs available. Etc.

Is anyone doing "internships"? Basically bringing in trainable staff and teaching them the ropes at a lower salary or other arrangement?

>Look for any online portfolios Lots of people stay under the radar and don’t want clients sites publicized

And most clients who know the game don’t want to be included on a client list/portfolio either.

There is a huge difference between being experienced at USING a pay per click system and understanding business strategy, analytics, and measuring results. It is far easier to teach someone who understands business and has life experience how to do ppc than it is to teach someone who knows how to use ppc to think logically and understand business strategy. I posted a strategy I believe will work well for both agencies and independent consultants who have more work than they can handle alone or wish to spend more time with analytics and business strategy. http://www.ppcthink.com/2007/09/07/how-to-meet-the-huge-demand-for-ppc-talent/ Anyone working in ppc accounts can greatly benefit from the two day comprehensive seminars developed by Mary O’Brien and her partners. They were heavily involved in both the development of, and managing the largest commercial accounts in, the original Overture system. The more you already know, the more you’ll get out of them and they are also easily understandable for someone with no ppc experience at all. The next ppcSummit is in the calendar section here at Sphinn and there are additional dates and locations on their Web site at http://ppcSummit.com.
