LOL, I didn't know about the Sphinn gaming group on Facebook, I'll have to request an invite for that one :)
Not having seen as many spam submissions as you, I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine the real #1 signal of spam is that it's their first submission.
For us peons out here on the outside the #1 signal is no avatar.
So my question is, why can't the first submission of a newly registered user be moderated? If anything you are forcing the spammer to submit at least one actual article before they start their spamming ways. It would improve the quality of the stories shown, and since the hot topics page is showing items 5-6 days old, delaying the posting of a new members submission by a few hours or whatever it takes for mods to check it out won't impact the freshness of the hot stories by much.
@JohnWeb: I've written the ability to moderate a new user's first submission into the Sphinn 2.0 Spec, so we should see this arrive sometime this year (we haven't put timelines on the new Sphinn system yet, as we're still looking at platforms).
Oh, and the vote-rigging Facebook group has now been closed down in case any of you are looking for it ;)
Ahemm... This is a 14 hour old post with 17 sphinns. Hmmmm......
By the way, where is that facebook group?........
Very funny article.
:)
@PurposeInc - 14 hours? You mean 1 hour, 40 minutes, maybe? :-)
Oh my fine sphinn mods... I do feel like I am playing 'whack a mole' sometimes when it comes to spam reporting... but I do try to keep whacking away when I am around.... Looks far more painful from your side...lol... Keep up the great work!
I mean how stupid you can be? It's a site for marketers about marketing and you still manage to spam it? It's like going to the toilet and still pissing in the corner on the floor. ;-) OK, Sphinn is no toilet, you got what I meant?
@onreact Christ, that's the best analogy for anything I've seen in a while. Still giggling :) I'm going to use that liberally.
Rob, did you really shut down Uncle Hank's group? She's going to tan your hide for that next week, little brother.
@onreact -- the SEO companies that come here and spam are the worst. Utterly stupid.....

^ haha
In what must be a total coincidence, anyone notice there has not been a single sphinn from a default green avatar account? 47 Sphinns and no green yet.
Hey Matt, thanks for this article. It amazes me that people are really that clueless, but I have to say as a long time anti-spam advocate, it does bring me pleasure to use the "report as spam" button when appropriate. If you're looking for another spam cop... :-)
