Just what I needed! Great illustration for how nofollow can be used as part of your internal link strategy to limit loss of PageRank to "overhead" pages.
Great article Dan (and part 1). Youve actually changed my perspective on nofollow. I still think it was a bad idea but we would be better taking advantage of the tools available than wasting our time debating it.
Nice write up Dan. If nofollow wasnt so closely associated with paid links, people would be all over it. The fact that people learned about internal nofollow largely through Matt Cutts also resulted in people mistakenly believing that Matt Cutts is "selling" nofollow using a new hook. This is a brilliant idea that works. Not every site needs to be optimized this way, but if you are working with clients with large sites looking for ways to achieve deeper index penetration, theyre not getting their moneys worth unless you know how to implement this tactic.
I know how you feel, Jill. I was skeptical about dynamic linking for a long time, and I really hated the idea of using Javascript or Flash to hide links. After nofollow became available, it seemed like that might be an option but I really needed to hear directly from the engines that it wasnt a problem. Most of us heard that last year at SES and Pubcon. Matts interview with Rand spelled it out clearly enough from Googles perspective. If you do play with it, just be careful if you try to get all "advanced" with it. Its easy to forget that "nofollowing" a link means that the anchor text in that link isnt passed any more.
Just found your article, Dan - I love your opinion here. I agree, I practice it, and its really been the ace in my deck many times.
