"Lyndoman probably would have gone on to continue to do more linkbaits for the client, if he had only learned to shut the f**k up."

Actually, I prefer they disclose such tactics especially in the case of false stories. But like you said, the bragging definitely hurt him. What I found surprising was that he didn't anticipate the negative reaction he received.

Rizoh nobody has really gone down that route before so I don't think anybody could anticipate the reaction. Not all was negative - most people just were reporting on the new wave of marketing tactics.

I don't think Lyndon was the first person to write a fake article for links. But he was likely the most successful. I'm sure it's been done before by people with smaller mouths.

@Darkmatter the first to write a fake article? Have you ever read fox news? Now run a back link check on there main page you will be absolutely shocked...of course they look like an authority..look whose pointing to them!!!

at least you would hope that there would be some no follow attributes in there...well there isn't. Oh well.

The point was never that it was fake.. The campaign was F**cking awesome and very successful. That was not the point.

meh. Weekly world news has been doing it for decades, and they have a huge worldwide readership compared to any local paper..but no one's pinning any medals on them. I don't fault anyone for seeking money and success, but I'm not impressed by people who are willing to crap in our collective corn flakes to get it.

I don't know that I would have done any better, seeing a fake story I wrote in the Sun would increase my mouth size 10 fold. Mixx in the likes of Twitter Sphinn, Digg and Stumble (yes mixx too sillys) and thats one big mouth. I still say Kudos to Lyndoman.

And there was me thinking I was going to have a week where people would stop talking about  me, sigh.

I think it's funny how people say this has hurt me, for every one person who hates what I have done, there is one that loves it and there is another wanting to stuff large denomination notes into my hand to do the same thing for them.

If I had to do the same again I would not change a thing. No I lie ;) I would change the name of Ralph Hardy to one of my mates, he would get a kick out of his name going around the world.

As for STFU, well, it's a catchy acronym. But, I have a really big gob, it's just not going to happen. Infact, I am going to tell as many people as I can what I do. And teach as many people as I can to replicate what I do, and get it under the radar.

Great title for an Ebook though, "Why Linkbaiters Want Me to STFU"

I can't even excape from you when I listen to the radio now. ;-)

The Ralph Hardy story was read out on Radio 4 on the News Quiz last Friday. I nearly choked.

Like it or not, I think your adventures in storytelling are going to be used as a popular case study for a long time yet as a readily identifiable example for any number of social media topics - both good and bad. Most of us are well over talking about it, but I still find new forums and blogs raising the topic for the first time in all manner of contexts.

yeah must be a real chore for a humble guy like you getting all this attention.

haha it certainly didn't hurt YOU, but it can potentially hurt everyone else who's trying to improve the negative perception of internet marketers. Good for you that you're making big bucks, but in the long run you're making all of our jobs harder. Is it really so difficult to understand that people are annoyed about that?

I don't think this "hurt" Lyndon.

Most people didn't even know his name before this... now he is well known. (in the industry)
