From the story: "I have been training/mentoring someone recently and I have come to the conclusion that I am no longer an SEO. That saddens me in a way. I liked being an SEO."

Its interesting you point this out Donna and a great observation. I find myself telling people that our agency calls itself a SEO agency, but what we actually do is really more about marketing. This was accentuated by a recent article writing promo we kicked off internally. Not one article entered was about search engine optimization. Topics included mobile, viral, social media, email marketing, media relations, etc but no "SEO". Youre on to something here and good luck delivering the 1 month crash course. :)
Interesting way to look at it. I suppose you are right, Donna. There are so many different aspects that we incorporate to successfully marketing a website these days: MVT, SEO, analytics analysis, etc. It just doesnt seem like the "SEO" title applies anymore.
Hi Donna, I was just listening to Kim talk about this over at Cre8. I do think your points are valid...and they really hit in when you realize the vast scope of just the basics you have to teach a client if they want to become self sufficient on the web...in other words, if they need to know everything you know. I would suggest, however, that the title of SEO just needs to stretch to encompass more than we originally thought it did. It can grow as we do. Nice article. Ill sphinn it! Miriam
The title caught my eye and I totally concur. Those of us who have been working in the online marketing space long enough realize that there are so many individual factors that combined together generate the results were currently achieving. Although improvement can be made in any one area, true growth can only truly be achieved by understanding the big picture. Those who start looking at more than just their own individual contribution will increase profits by quantum leaps. I met someone somewhere whose business card said Internet Strategist. I realized that is PRECISELY what we really are now. We no longer do SEO or PPC or linking or affiliate programs or analytics in a vaccum. We brainstorm an overall Internet Strategy.
Wow careful Donna...my heart gave an "oh no" kind of lurch. But yes. Thats what is great about this industry...you are never really "only" an SEO. This is one of those careers or hobbies where you never stop learning and there are so many different things you can learn! I dont think its possible to stagnate.Sphunn :)
